I haven't followed anime for a few years, when did this start and who thought it was a good idea? Do they think that the lazy 3D background characters and lame 3D mechas aren't enough?

Compare that to something like... Gundam UC... faith in anime dying.

can you give me some examples of popular animes 3D wise?

Sakasama Inverted was done mostly (if not entirely) in CG, and it looked beautiful.
Ushinawareta Mirai wo Motomete was also made in CG. It wasn't impressive visually, but it wasn't terrible for a CG.

it looks terrible when it's not done right, such as

(to be fair, it's an independent movie, which probably means that it's low budget)

CGI, just like hand drawn animation, has its quality dependent on the studio/people working on it.

On one hand, it can be crap(see that one CGI flashback sequence from Mekakucity Actors.....good god.....). On the other hand, it can be great, like Arpeggio of Blue Steel, Etotama, and Karen Senki.

And really there is absolutely no full length anime that is devoid of CGI nowadays. Every single 20+ minute long anime these days use CGI to some level. Just pay attention to the credits, you'll see listings for CGI artists/studios in the credits of every full length anime nowadays. Often it is just low level stuff, though.

It's WAY cheaper to produce

Any idea in terms of actual cost differences per episode?

Take JoJo's Bizarre Adventure or the Bakemonogatari series. They are both completely computer rendered but look great!

Wow I had no idea! Computer rendered = CG right?

That's not exactly that different from what we are getting in CGI anime right now. The well made CGI anime looks rather similar to that. A bit lower quality, sure, but by and large do look like that.

All I can think of as a reply:

Whoever came up with the first CG car to be used in anime is probably really freakin' rich right now. Because I can't remember the last time I saw a car in (modern) anime that wasn't CG.

sometimes it looks good and sometimes it looks bad. Arpeggio of Blue Steel is one of the CG animes that I actually enjoy it's CG style.

The most redeeming quality of CGI is that it makes it easy to keep characters and objects "on model".

The bad usually comes from not blending it well with 2D work, and/or cutting the frame rate due to time pressure.

Anyone that believes they hate CGI in general has probably seen well done CGI and had no problem with it, because they didn't realize it was CGI.

One producer and pundit I remember reading a few years back was a big proponent of CGI simply because she discovered that a lot of the tedious work (in betweening and the like) was being subbed out to north Korea. The idea of a political prisoner being beaten for doing a bad drawing didn't sit well with her.

Like it or not CGI is cheaper and here.

as for whomever mentioned Babylon 5... That show was GREAT. They were pioneers of CGI.

I'm not really a fan of CGI... I get that it makes some complicated scenes a lot easier to animate but most of the time it just looks like its been integrated badly into the anime. There's no way I'd watch a fully CGI show.... Unless you have a lot of money to do a good job of it it just does not look good at all.

when done right, CGI anime can look damn amazing. just watch the Appleseed (2004) and Appleseed Ex Machina (2007) movies. fully done in CGI, and they look amazing. Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio is another example of very well done CGI. the rendering is very well done, and the fluidity of motion for the characters looks almost indistinguishable from a drawn anime.

some poor examples are RWBY, where the CGI is so unmistakably CGI, and the textures look so bland it could almost be mistaken for a PS2 game. the story, characters, and action is what saves that show. Sidonia no Kishi has better detailed textures, but the movements of the characters look so stiff and give everything a very unnatural look.

The problem isn't CGI. It's the fact that it's in 2D shows. Because for the most part it is jarring when paired with 2D animation.

However I do hope there comes a day when CGI can be indistinguishable from 2D animation.

I am sure everyone remembers very old anime and how far It has come? Maybe we should give the CGI style art form a chance and see just what stange new worlds it can take us too.
