I think most older anime look really ugly and are hard to watch, not just in quality but I also much prefer the more modern style.

As for the CGI like pretty much everyone here has said it can look great if done well or ruin the entire feel of a show if it is done poorly.

When will we get hi quality 3D CG models like in Guilty Gear?

You can´t tell the difference!

I have no idea if you're kidding or not ><

Those models are pretty low quality, to be honest, and probably more importantly they clash terribly when they try togo 3d for it.

Yeah, not a fan of that stuff either. I'd rather that anime doesn't go too much in this direction, but it's possible that there will be more 3D-rendered anime in the future, since it's cheaper to produce.

I'm watching Knights of Sidonia right now. On one hand, it's really well-done and I'd say that some of the scenes look more cinematic than they would in 2-D. On the other hand, I feel like the characters' facial expressions are not as expressive, and sometimes there's an "uncanny valley" feel to it. Maybe in the future CGI technology will get better and they can solve these types of problems.

There's some pretty good 3D animes out there such as RWBY.

I don't really mind it, but when they use both 3D and their regular 2d art style, it annoys me to no end. (Parasyte's background characters, Kancolle.) It makes the anime seems so low in quality. Pick one style and stick to it.

If you want old school CG, and I actually think it was really well done. Go watch ReBoot.

The story is basically that there is sentient life inside our computers that are forced to be NPCs whenever we feel like playing a game. It was one of my favorite shows to watch as a kid. This is 1994, so it is like pre-Toy Story.

Well, CGI in knights of Sidonia was both epically good and bad. The faces had crap animation. But the mecha was super good. It all comes down to man hours. Season 2 seems to have better animation on the faces
Rwby fox example, had crap cg, but the animation was near flawless to the point I forgot I was watching souped up ps1 graphics. Dance scene not withstanding. Cg mat a spell casting looks grate as cg.

It does look terrible. Especially when a couple of animes try to make the group of people moving in 3d. Looks way out of place and frankly it pretty much ruins the episode for me. If the 3d animation blends in nicely i don't have that much of a problem with it though.

The trick is that if you make it sync well with 2d elements, it starts getting more expensive again (although still cheaper than traditional animation).

The other big problem is that stylized characters of the sort we see in anime are hard to model well into 3d. It gets very uncanny valley.

Cheaper and easier. But hey, at least it's not rotoscoping.

If anime studios could make their CGI scenes like some video games, then I'd be all about CGI. If anime CGI looked like Naruto Ninja Storm, Ni No Kuni, Tales, etc.? That'd be fantastic. Every studio should aim for Ninja Storm level quality , this how you do proper anime CGI ladies and gentlemen!

But the reality is the game studios have much better budgets and more staff often times so their CGI is way better! Of course comparing it to CGI scenes from like Uncharted or Final Fantasy is just too much to ask for.

I just don't understand why studios even bother with it? Like Arslan has great art and animation, but it's CGI scenes are so bad! Can they really not keep everything 2d?
