This is probably the most untrustworthy thing you can say to prove your trust. You know a person can't be trusted if they ask you this every time you're not doing something they want. What would you say in response? Talk about the instances someone have said this to you

That's like... When someone says,

"I don't like you. You're meaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnn."

As a child... teenager...

I rarely trust people, so I don't take offence when people don't trust me.

I'm way too trusting so if someone says that to me it has to be bc they have done something to lose that trust ex: lie I don't lie and I expect it in return. Therefore my response would probably be bc you lied to me...

I have never been asked that.

Never been asked that either. I only trust 1 person and even then it's only to an extent. I have little faith in people, much less trust. Rather play it smart/safe than get screwed.

We also have to take account the different contexts this line is used. Asking that question isn't always necessarily a bad thing.

For example: I was taking my gf to a formal party and that was where I would introduce her to my closest circle of friends. I told her that I told them about her and that they were excited to meet her. She was really nervous that she wouldn't meet up to their expectations and was considering not going. I told her that they'll like her because I liked her then proceeded to ask her, "Why don't you trust me? Just trust me a little on this one. You'll do fine." She went with me, I introduced her, I introduced my boys to her and we all had a good time

Feels like a bit of a cheesy thing to say.

It's the line the guy says in the movies just before everything goes wrong...

If you notice someone seems put off by you in an abnormal way and seems skeptical about what you are saying it would be pretty normal to ask "Why don't you trust me?"

it's also the same line a child uses when their parents don't let them go clubbing at 14.

I've gotten "Don't you trust me?" before.

All in all, I think I trust others a bit too much. That is getting less and less though as I get older.
