Double conjunctions or prepositions
Posted 5/4/15
What do you personally think of double conjunctions or prepositions in a sentence?

E.g. "The bookstore I went to to get free comics had a super duper long line, and they took a picture of the queue with me in it!!"

Are you fine with it? or do you think this is a major flaw in sentence construction?

It's okay. I mean, it's just wording, I get what it means, since I'm kind of reading most content aloud in my head as I go along.

I enjoy them. It's funny to watch people get confused over that lol.

I only hate it when I do that.

I agree, I hate it when I do that more than when someone else does.

I don't think there is anything really wrong with it, but for me it is always a very un-enjoyable experience and I much prefer listening/saying something different.

Out loud, it doesn't bother me, nor in casual conversation (text), but written I'd lean towards the use of "... to which I went to get..."
That being said, double prepositions/conjunctions, in some cases/for some people, are easier to use than finding the correct words (which/what/who/whom/etc can become complicated, especially for non-native English speakers). However, I generally avoid double prepositions and conjunctions in English when possible - personal preference - but I have no issues with others doing it as long as they're able to properly convey what they intend to communicate.

In literary sense, it's just poor english. It hits the ear wrong too!
