I was browsing through the top manga on myanimelist, and i saw this one called Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria at second place after Berzerk, so i decided to check it out. The thought of text based stories wasn't very appealing to me at that time, but it had really good reviews so i decided to read through one volume.

Ive read quite a lot of books in my life with different genrees, but this was just on a whole other level of litterature. I can't even begin to imagine the amount of thought put into this series, and how many will miss out on it because it's labeled as a japenese Light novel. But yeah, that's another story.

If anyone could recommend something similar, then that's great, but a Ln with some of the same qualities is also fine. Or just a completely different genree, if it's really good.

(Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria and Gekkou is the only ones ive read)

My personal recommendations would be Mushoku Tensei, Overlord, and Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari.

I haven't read either one of those so I cant really recommend one that's like them however I do recommend Toaru Majutsu no Index and Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei since I think both of them are really good. The publisher Yen press has some light novels for sale so they also might have something you like. Anyway hope you find some stuff you enjoy good luck and have fun.

A Certain Magical Index is available from Yen On (Yen Press' LN imprint) and The Irregular At Magic High School is coming in November, if you want to read legally :)

I am halfway through vol. 1 of The Devil is a Part-Timer and love it, after watching the anime and reading the first volume of the manga, I like the little details you can find in the LN.

This site has a list of Light Novels translated and published in English.

I've only read four LN series, but I have a lot of them that I've been meaning to read at some point:

Toradora (all): Similar to the anime, but better on every level: goes deeper, the ending is better, and the "Palm-Top Tiger of Happiness" side story (about a 10th grader who sets out to find the legendary item, which he thinks is a statue or something) left me in stitches.

SAO (first 8 vol): Compared to the anime, the game mechanics and world background are explained a lot better; also the anime puts things in chronological order, while the books jump around a lot. Still very similar; if you like one, you'll probably like the other, and vice versa.

Spice and Wolf: (first 9 vol): Goes much deeper into the world and the characters than the anime, and also continues well past where the anime left off. Can't recommend this one highly enough.

Baka to Test: (all) Haven't seen the anime, but it looks like they are very different. The LN starts out really good (except for the gay jokes, which are kinda uncomfortable), and I liked the characters a lot; but after a few volumes the humor got pretty repetitive. It did end nicely though.

I read the first volume of Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria, and I didn't much care for it. Still, it was far better than many of the other light novels that I've tried to read.

As for a series that I did like, Tasogare-iro no Uta Tsukai is the first that comes to mind. Unfortunately, only the first two volumes are translated, and the project seems to have been abandoned. I'm now reading Hyouketsu Kyoukai no Eden from the same author, and it's pretty good. They've translated six volumes and the project is active.

The only other series that I've both tried and enjoyed is Tokyo Ravens. The series isn't finished, but the translation is active, and they're currently caught up with the Japanese publications.

I guess, if you're looking for a complete series then don't take my recommendations.

might as well read Kizumonogatari, since the movie is taking forever to get released and it seems you like monogatari series judging by your avatar.

Just posting to alert you that I've moved this to our Advice, Info, and Recommendations forum.

Also wanted to remind folks not to name (even by abbreviation) sites or translation groups that provide access to material they don't have legal permission for. It's against site rules. (I've edited and deleted some posts to bring them into compliance.)

I'm going to second Spice and Wolf, I started reading those recently and I'm loving them.

Also, the Haruhi series is very good.

Both are available on Amazon

I'm currently reading "The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor". It's Korean but pretty good nonetheless. I think people who enjoy Log Horizon, SAO, and/or Overlord will like this one. There's a huge # of chapters so it'll keep you entertained for a long while.

Yeah i'd prefer them to be complete :/

I'm surprised you didn't care much for it, as volume one was pretty much the best work of litterature i have laid my eyes on, even though it's just the setup for the remaining story ^^ But yeah, i guess our tastes are very different

(If you are ever going to pick it up again, don't lose hope if you think volume 2 sucks. Personally i think it's the weakest by far, and almost made me drop it)
It picks up again stronger than ever in volum 3
