Recently in Japan Ariana Miyamoto a half black half Japanese woman was crowned Miss Universe Japan.
However this decission was met with a huge backlash from the Japanese community.
Saying she doesn't look Japanese enough to represent them and that they deserve a full blooded Japanese. Some even going so far as to say her skin is too black and that she's ugly.
Not living up to Japan's white skin beauty standards.
What be done to change Japan's attitude towards foreigners and mixed races?

On a positive note I am glad she was chosen, so at least there ARE some Japanese people with open minds.

To them it's unusual to see because the population is mostly Asians. Of course someone is going to stick out if their skin color is different or their eyes aren't the same and so on. But they did go a little far with this one to be honest.

And we can't really change their opinions about anything. Some really like foreigners, and others just have pure hatred towards them.

Yeah, the Japanese are fairly racist, but that goes for most homogeneous nations.

Mostly Japanese you mean, they don't treat other Asians very well either. Filipinos are relegated to working low level menial jobs, particularly the women. Koreans can't vote, even if they are 2nd or 3rd generation citizens. The Chinese are treated nearly as bad as the Filipinos. Western European and Caucasian Americans are treated the best, even so, they shouldn't over stay their welcome.

Even though it's 2015, the Japanese are still closed off culturally compared to every other developed nation.

Contrary to popular belief (that America is the worst country when it comes to racism) nearly any major nation in this day and age is racist. Japan being one of them isn't a surprise. I myself never experienced any when I visited there for 2 weeks but then again I'm American and white so that generally goes smoothly in most countries. You should see India, any asian country, France, and many others that are the same way. If you aren't one of them or what they deem as "good for business" you might as well expect different treatment. Sad but true.

The way I understand it, the problem stems mostly from the large 'older', and very much xenophobic, population in Japan, making up to what, 40% of the total population? The younger generations seem to be rather accepting of foreigners. I imagine any nation with this high amount of elderly would cause quite a bit of social issues.

I think it's also stupid that Eurovision song contest performers can be from any country and they are just representing the countries. I guess Japan is pretty emphasizing with traditions, I understand the people who wants pure blooded Japanese and I think people uses word racism a way too lightly these days.

Yeah, maybe racism gets thrown around too much, in general and for the Japanese. Certainly there are plenty of Japanese who are racist, like those who look down upon the Koreans and Chinese (really, lots of Asians hate other kinds of Asians), but to get to my point...I heard a word used to describe many of the Japanese, someone said that a lot of Japanese people tend to be ethnocentric, so maybe racism isn't the word to use for a lot of them, but a lot of them think very highly of their people and themselves, thinking they are superior to all others. Certainly this happens all around the world in so many countries, but I think the point this person was making is that a high amount of Japanese people are ethnocentric.

You don't think maybe this conclusion is based on a bias because you are a member of a different demographic?

Miss Universe is already one of the most idiotic events. What do you expect? This is what happens when idiots make events for idiots.

Lol Indians range in skin tone. They can be as light as a German and as dark as a Ethiopian.
