I've recently come across a few PVC figurines that were interesting to where I thought they might be nice collectibles of series I like to have on display. Then my jaw hit the floor when I saw some of them easily surpass $150! Even with a fair amount of detail, that seems like an awful lot of money for a figurine. I can't help but give it perspective and think, for a $180 figurine, I could basically buy 3 brand new console games. But not having owned one yet, I have yet to see the detail, how much one weighs or sturdy they are. And then again if you look at what's been happening with scalpers in the Nintendo amiibo market, I guess it may not seem as bad.

I'd definitely look forward to hearing some of everybody's experiences or advice on this subject. Hope everyone's having a great day!

they are expensive for me... for any average wage person, really. But just think of it like buying a cologne... only pick the ones you really like.

if i were richer, i would definitely get more figures and merchandise. damn my poorness.

As a proud owner of 20 figures, I don't regret every penny I spent on them.

3 brand new console games lose their value after so long and end up becoming worthless in the end of it except for maybe really rare titles or special editions. Figures will last as long as you enjoy them and usually will always go up in value.

Value is less to do with whatever skill or effort went into it, and more with how much someone might be willing to pay for it. Put another way, whether it's worth the cost is something only you can decide. I personally don't think you should view figure collecting as much of an investment commodity-- and I own more than 60 myself, of various sizes, ranging in price from perhaps US$25 to over US$250 each. As a collector, I enjoy them by just having them-- it's about as irrational as that, I'll admit for myself. If any actually appreciate in value, I'm thinking it'll be a rare few at most, and perhaps only if one finds the rare individual buyer who's particularly interested for whatever his/her own reasons. I'm not counting on any of them funding my retirement even one bit.

Detail, size, weight vary considerably. My heaviest is probably 1/8 scale Ultimate Madoka, which I think weighs over 2 kg, and yet seems fragile enough I suspect some parts would break even if dropped only a foot or two. Most figures are PVC and ABS plastic, though other materials can be found. I have a Chougoukin Hoi Hoi San that has some metal in it.

I guess it all depends on how much you like staring at things. Isn't much else do be done with 'em. Unless you truly crave the affirmation/envy of fellow otaku types. I'd take the video games any day. If you have a corner of your house that truly needs anime related décor, you could get a nice large wall scroll for probably less than the cost of the display case you'd buy to store the figurines.

They're pretty well made, I would suggest only getting a couple though, they drain $$ pretty quickly. I love my Hajime Hinata figure.

It depends. The figurines are really lovely and I want lots of them, but some of the prices are just ridiculous. I'm sure you can get them cheaper somewhere.

They are a few worth getting, like Figma but there are places where you can get them for cheaper.
I only have maybe, 3 at full price buys but the rest were off sites which cost me a fraction of the original retail price.

i used to buy the cheap knock off versions because i don't have a lot of space and i tend to wanna change how my shelves look every so often but recently i bought my first real original ( swamp witch metallia) one for $160 and i can't say i regret it all. that will stay on my shelf for good

Figures are a luxury item to begin with. It's only recently that they have become somewhat affordable due to companies like GSC putting out mass-produced figures. They're only worth it if you truly have the disposable income to waste on such things. IOW, don't think of buying them if your buying decision hinges on paycheck to paycheck.

That said, some of them are very easy on the eyes and nice to look at. They can definitely brighten someone's room in a good way.

Well, typically I pre-order mine so they don't get into the $150 dollar range you speak of. I'm happy that the yen currently is weak to the U.S. dollar, so that will help However, collecting figures can get extremely addicting as well. They really do take away from some stuff I'd also like to buy. My collection is growing a lot... it's also making my wallet cringe lol.
