Post Reply Characters and You

I've heard that the characters we like in any show, book, movie, ect... tends to be what we desire in yourself (Not all the time but a good amount of the time)

i,e If you watch a movie with a badass protagonist and we're not content with our level of badassery we desire to be that badass in real life and tell yourself,"man I wish I could be like that badass that would be awesome." or just about any characteristic that is displayed by any character in which we lack.

I was thinking about this and it was quite insightful biased on the types of anime I like and Why I like certian characters so much.

So what are some characters that you do this with?

Well, that is not quite how I choose my favorite characters. I usually choose characters that generally act as I do.
But something close to your theory would be 'role models'.
If you do not know already, someone doesn't have to be real to be your role model, they can be imaginary or someone you generally look up to.

If I had any role models from any anime, it would have to be Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin, Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach, and Kirito from Sword Art Online.

Why I choose them as my role models or someone who generally reminds me of myself, is because they will sacrifice their life to save their friends. They never turn on their friends, and they are kind and respectful. Their personality's are the closest to mine I have ever seen anywhere, in anime and outside anime.

Yeah, I don't think that really fits with me. My favorite characters tend to be ones that I would have romantic feelings towards if they were real, or sometimes they are simply those who are fun to watch, generally because they are silly, energetic, or unpredictable. Those are qualities I desire in myself.

I've always liked the typical overpowered main characters who fight in the name of justice and friendship. But I also always liked the bad guys that just bring agony, despair and no hope to the protagonists.

Well, I tend to try and become the people who always end up making the right choices, even when it puts them in harm's way. That is a quality I wish I had. Sadly, that is something I can only mimic in gaming and when I write. Also over social media. However, IRL, I am a wimp, so that is why I try and be the (almost) good guy on the internet. Some of the characters I aspire to be are Takizawa Akira from Eden of the East, Keiji Kiraya from All You Need is Kill and several other characters.

Definitely not in ALL cases. I like characters who have NO moral code, obviously, I have one, I just have a thing for the crazy ones when it comes to characters and character types.

Maybe for some of them, but not all of them.

I like Tomoko from WataMote, because I can relate to that character, not because I want to be her (in fact, I'm already her, I feel like the author is writing about me, to be honest).

Additionally, I like this badass... was rooting for him, but as per usual anime cliché, the villain never wins

There's definitely some truth to it for me. Characters/stories that really hit home when I was younger like Squall(FF8), or Tomoya Okazaki make up my favorite Anime and video game. Then for female characters I tend to like the powerful, yet very caring types like Tifa (FF7) or Tsubaki (Soul Eater). But then there's also the polar opposites from me like Wolverine, Vegeta, Hiei,Harley Quinn, etc. It it kinda depends I guess.

I tend to like Machiavellian characters. However, Light is way too arrogant for my tastes, and Lelouche is way too emotionally unstable. Therefore I am left with Oberstein from Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

Oberstein is the smartest guy in the universe, he is also the ultimate patriot willing to put his goal of a thriving empire before even his own life. The only thing is that he will not miss an opportunity for victory. He will sacrifice innocent people for the greater good. However in my opinion, the fact that he will also sacrifice himself for the greater good makes him morally square.

I often find myself annoyed with characters letting their emotions get the best of them in stories. Either their downfalls are caused because of clouded judgment due to emotional instability, or the plot becomes contrived due to that emotional instability. Oberstein never becomes emotionally unstable, and that is what I love about him.

Aside from Oberstein, also my namesake, King of Bandit Jing.

Think of Jing sort of like Spike from Cowboy Bebop crossed with Kirito from SAO. Each episode of his anime has him saving a different girl (they don't always fall in love with him though, and there are times the story ends without them even knowing of his existence), and he is a kickass fighter. The difference from Kirito is that like Spike, Jing's fighting style is fluid having him do a lot of dodging, deflecting, quick hitting, and like also like Spike, aside from smooth one liners or questions here and there he barely talks and just smiles. He is pretty much all walk, no talk... He's a man of few words, has awesome action scenes, is smooth like James Bond, never really takes a moral stance on anything just kicks ass. He is like my perfect anime action hero.

If I were to go into American Fiction. Obi-wan would be my favorite character there. I know this is blasphemy, but Ewan McGregor's Obi-wan is the one I prefer. In fact Ewan McGregor is one of my favorite actors. I love him in every movie he does even if it sucks. Jack the Giant Slayer was a 7 in my book, but I'd give Ewan's performance a 9. As to why I like Obi-wan, again emotions. He isn't heartless, but he is in control of his emotions. He isn't repressing them like most other Jedi, he is just able to live with them and not cause them to be destructive.

I've always wanted to emulate some combination of Gintoki, Rick, and Kyouma, in that order. The perfect storm of indifference and mania.

Gintoki, the lovable nose-picking cretin with the heart of gold and balls of silver.

Rick, the deranged genius, talented physicist, and all round upgraded version of Doc Brown from Back to the Future.

Hououin Kyouma, a manical self-proclaimed scientist with delusions of grandeur.
