I think I'm always drawn to characters that put those that are close to them above all else.

Off the top of my head, a good example would be Koro-Sensei from Assassination Classroom. The way he goes out of his way to do anything and everything for his students is really awesome in my eyes.

To put it shortly, I really value the ability to give your all for those that matter. I really admire my parents for being so hardworking and attentive to me and my brothers, so I've always wanted to be like them. So I tend to be attracted to those selfless characters since they personify those qualities that I value so highly.

I tend to like Machiavellian characters. However, Light is way too arrogant for my tastes, and Lelouche is way too emotionally unstable. Therefore I am left with Oberstein from Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

Oberstein is the smartest guy in the universe, he is also the ultimate patriot willing to put his goal of a thriving empire before even his own life. The only thing is that he will not miss an opportunity for victory. He will sacrifice innocent people for the greater good. However in my opinion, the fact that he will also sacrifice himself for the greater good makes him morally square.

I often find myself annoyed with characters letting their emotions get the best of them in stories. Either their downfalls are caused because of clouded judgment due to emotional instability, or the plot becomes contrived due to that emotional instability. Oberstein never becomes emotionally unstable, and that is what I love about him.

Aside from Oberstein, also my namesake, King of Bandit Jing.

Think of Jing sort of like Spike from Cowboy Bebop crossed with Kirito from SAO. Each episode of his anime has him saving a different girl (they don't always fall in love with him though, and there are times the story ends without them even knowing of his existence), and he is a kickass fighter. The difference from Kirito is that like Spike, Jing's fighting style is fluid having him do a lot of dodging, deflecting, quick hitting, and like also like Spike, aside from smooth one liners or questions here and there he barely talks and just smiles. He is pretty much all walk, no talk... He's a man of few words, has awesome action scenes, is smooth like James Bond, never really takes a moral stance on anything just kicks ass. He is like my perfect anime action hero.

If I were to go into American Fiction. Obi-wan would be my favorite character there. I know this is blasphemy, but Ewan McGregor's Obi-wan is the one I prefer. In fact Ewan McGregor is one of my favorite actors. I love him in every movie he does even if it sucks. Jack the Giant Slayer was a 7 in my book, but I'd give Ewan's performance a 9. As to why I like Obi-wan, again emotions. He isn't heartless, but he is in control of his emotions. He isn't repressing them like most other Jedi, he is just able to live with them and not cause them to be destructive.

Oberstein's "greater good" perspective is held prisoner by his sinisterly suspicious ideals.Oberstein is as ruthless as Eichmann and is not trusted nor liked by either his peers or his subordinates. There's even talk of his clandestine removal.Oberstein' advice and, (subsequent actions), that allowed civilians to be killed is highly reminiscent to what conspiracy theorists attribute to Sir Winston Churchill 's alleged actions or inaction at Coventry.Oberstein is tolerated by the Emperor because Oberstein's deviousness and ruthlessness is something The Emperor feels he himself doesn't possess in sufficient enough quantities necessary to safeguard the emperor's newly established dictatorship from counter revolutionary forces within and from outside the Empire..This whole series is basically the Code of Bushido performed as a Wagnerian opera.Sorry, no fat lady.

I tend to watch anime series for the story and not because I identify with or want to acquire certain personality traits of the characters.

I tend to like characters that I can identify with to a degree, such as this guy here

<----

Of course, I myself am literally a "Character". so maybe I will just stick to liking myself

I would like to be more like Ciel Phanomthive from Kuroshitsuji. I already have the tsundere personality and the unsociable side to me, but i'd quite like to be rich and have a butler.

I will say that it's not the case for me for a couple characters,

Hina Ebina I think I just have a thing for Fujoshi's they add such a fun playfulness to the anime that I begin to adore the character for contribution's

Hisoka again it's for the contribution to the whole story, the mysteriousness, how he's raising sheeps for slaughter so to speak it's just quite interesting to me since I haven't seen many characters like him before

Those are just some.

That seems plausible. What could also be an explanation is that we like characters we can relate to. For instance, there are a few characters who I aspire to be in real life just because I see them as the far improved version of me. Characters that I feel are similar to me are characters like Joseph Joestar and Vash the Stampede, because my personality is extremely similar to theirs, so I feel that they are the improved versions of me.

Except for the whole womanizing thing. They need to get their acts together on that.

I tend to like characters that are somewhat sinister and scheming. Not sure what that says about me. Maybe I subconsciously wish to be a person of questionable integrity?

But, at the same time, I also like some airheaded characters and some badass characters.
