Episode 1

Well that was quite interesting!

I think there's some metaphor in this episode and this series has medical themes in it so expecting a lot of "accidents" to happen. I wonder if it will episodic in nature though? Seems like the show is maintaining a rather serious nature to adapt with the premise as well. I'm curious to see how it will go but so far, it has my attention.

Not a bad start for a series I remember my Dad loving, but never watched myself. We'll see how it goes.

Not sure if it was the times in that anime setting, but currently in the UK, the medical scene & politics are always in conflict. The anime had staff protesting, but as the intern pointed out, they had an emergency and need help urgently, to which the staff couldn't care less about.
UK NHS staff don't want to strike against unfair reforms, as peoples' lives are in danger, but they are being pushed hard into a corner.

Also, how shady was that guy not paying the full amount for his son and his return to normality? I suppose you could argue that he shouldn't charge something that high, given that he's a student, but a deal's a deal.

Ep. 1 was badass. I really like the animation style. Even though it differs a lot from the Manga in overall style, you can still see the influence coming through. I also like that they are keeping it as a period piece. I don't think the substance and importance of the subject matter would be the same if they modernized it too much. I also really liked the part at the end with his hands shaking and to see the emotion and breakdown of his mental state from what had just happened. Even if he doesn't look it or act it at times, he's probably the most human character in the series I have a feeling. I need to go back and watch the other OVAs and stuff they have put out over the years to compare.

Plus this was freakin' hilarious

Been looking forward to this since I found out about it. I've been digging some of Tezuka's more dramatic works recently and I've been meaning to check Blackjack out. While it's not based on the Tezuka manga, it is scripted by Ryosuke Takahashi who is probably one of my favourite industry figures. Plus it's always good to see something oldschool getting a chance.

I enjoyed the first episode and will definitely be watching the second. I really appreciated the style they used for the surgical detail, abstracting it allowed the viewer too see what was important to the plot rather than trying to make sense of a gory mess. I was also a fan of the historical context, I don't know how much they are going to do with the setting but 1968 student uprisings are a pretty fascinating part of history. The main concern I had is that this episode felt very episodic and it could possibly lack momentum as a show if it's purely episodic.

if its anything like the live action they'll show how kiriko became kiriko :DDDD i was worried about this show being not as good as the original in terms of plot, but it seems like they did research!! also WHO is that person who looks like a recolour of Hyakkimaru?? (the guy with the long silver hair) WHO IS HEEEEEEEE WHOOOOOOOOOO??

i almost thought that since his hands were shaking they were going to go right into the episode where black jack almost had paralyzed fingers ;A; its nice to see whenever his emotions show through, especially like the original when its usually at the end of the episode and you finally learn about what he's thinking. That money thing was RUDE AF. (but classic black jack xD) im so glad theyre making it episodical, i couldnt really imagine a black jack that took forever (since his average surgery time is like.. what.. 20 minutes?) the art style is derived from the OVAs, where they somehow made a very mature looking pretty style WORk for this show c: definitely check them out. id say my favourite thing is that they'll have brand new scenerios instead of ones tezuka has already scripted

dont worry about the episodic detail xD they seem to be taking great inspiration from the manga, and sooner or later you'd get hooked the surgery part was great, though typically tezuka shows a little more gore but i like how they picked and chose what stuff to leave out.

black jack: metaphor to every episode
accidents? on average 1-5 accidents per episodes

the show is probably more serious and a little more for maturer audiences than the original (they did make the anime version a little more child friendly, too)

one thing i can say is

HE ACTUALLY PUTS ON HIS SURGERY CLOTHES INSTEAD OF GETTING A MAGICAL GIRL TRANSFORMATION (THOUGH IT WAS LIKE 3 SECONDS) IN THE 2008 ANIME

Meh. Having no previous experience with the character, this just left me feeling totally cold. It just felt.. dumb to me. Not coming back for seconds on this one.

So one of my personal rituals when starting a new anime is to NOT look it up, don't ride the hype train, or pay attention to previews, forums etc. So I go into this cold without knowing anything. Only after watching the first episode. No wonder some of the artwork felt straight out of the 80s.

It's a prequel, so that means everything's been established and they're just fleshing out backstory, which also means not knowing the universe in which this is set. This might go on the back-burner for me. Doesn't mean I like or dislike, but just rather am disconnected from a character I have no knowledge of.

I know next to nothing about Jack Black. I am a new comer to his world. From my perspective of watching the first episode it looks deadly. I'm hooked.

I like that artwork style. It is preferable to a lot of the modern stuff where they use CGI to substitute for actual drawings.

The first episode revels quite a bit about our protagonist. Dedicated to medicine and especially surgery. Not particularly interested in politics. He is no angle or he is a pragmatics one asking for 5 million to save the boy's limbs. A strong character not giving into peer pressure but he is not emotionally inert, he suffers the shakes after his first surgical operation. There is still a lot we don't know about him, this is only the first episode.

I am looking forward to it and I will be able to give a newcomers perspective on Jack Black.
