I'm fascinated by medicine, lives of doctors/medical students, etc. Had to check this series out - and I'm far from disappointed! I like that it's set in the 60s, and the art and animation was pretty good. MC surprised me with how human he actually is; I thought for sure that he'd be the stoic type that never shows any emotion. Also, the female intern cracks me tf up.

Will definitely continue watching.

Episode 1

In the middle of watching the old Black Jack and wow is Hazama's voice in this different (but that was to be expected).

Kinda stupid that the boy decided to stay on the bike to get hit by the train instead of abandoning the bike.

The dad is a jerk, you'd think he'd be grateful that Hazama saved his kid's life.

Good episode, better than expected (hope it stays that way).

Reminds me of a very Romanticized version of Netflix's The Knick and the tone is so much more serious than I expected, more or less, quite pleased with the series start (aside from the awful train hit setup...like what hell pedestrians....pull the kid out, even just know general eastern mentalities to work as a unit, that was a bit weak...although I can see a kid that young being that "dumb")

Definitely an interesting start. The style is definitely retro but I'm into that so it works for me. But yeah, wow, people. Nobody had the cojones to grab that kid out of the way? Really? That's even sadder than the dad haggling over the price of the procedure.

Not to be cynical or anything but the modern day equivalent would be people standing around with smartphones taking pictures of scenes and/or tweeting

Could also be an example of bystander effect, it's not super dissimilar from the case of Wang Yue. Equally they could have done the scene with a bit more urgency, for example no one might have been able to move the child without getting hit by the train themselves, the direction didn't really make it super clear though.

This series was enjoyable for me!

I didn't include this on my list, but it looks like I will be watching now. A boy loses his arm and leg, so Hazama steps up to fix him right up, but only to get screwed by his father. I believe the genre will be Drama with a theme of medical science to it, which I find interesting. I am looking forward to some more surgery scenes and the next episode!

Episode 1

First off I don't know anything about Black-Jack except that it is classic anime. But these are my first impressions (more like critics) of the new series...
I am conflicted. I feel there was an imbalance between ambition and financial constraints.

Here is why, usually an anime is trying to get a point across, they focus their animation to reinforce that point. For instance in HaNaYaMaTa or K-On although the setting was about a highschool dance club (or a light music club) the actually intention of the anime was between the relationships between the characters. Thus in both anime very little attention is actually given to the sport and instead all of the direction and focus(and animation) is on the characters and their interactions. Then you have shows that are sort of the opposite, like guilty crown where the action set pieces were the defining moments and were given the most attention.
(However I will bash on HaNaYaMaTa a bit here, that show also had this problem of giving too much attention to something they apparently didn't want to animate.)

I don't think Young Black Jack Episode 1 had this focus.
I think one of the problems is that it being the pilot episode it needs to set up the setting and character(s) but I feel where the animation was its cheapest was coincidentally the longest part of the episode: The surgery (Which is about 6 minutes long in a 24 minute anime... 1/4th of the episode!)

Here are the elements introduced in this episode(in order):

With so much time devoted to the Surgery scene isn't this suppose to be where the most attention to detail went in? Well... no...

The biggest problem I have with this scene is the camera work, I always say that if you can't mute a visual medium and still make it interesting... then your cinematography is lacking.
The entire scene basically runs like your typical Dragon Ball GT episode, where there is a lot of:

With all this cookie-cutter animation why even make the surgery the longest part of your episode?

Was there a budget constraint and they ran out of money just as the surgery scenes needed to be made?
Was the surgery scene outsourced where it didn't get the attention it deserves like other parts of the episode?
Was the episode censored? (Notice the lack of blood on basically everything) And they hastily created/spliced together a tv friendly edition? (Like Pupa)

For instance take these two gifs for example, which would you say has better animation quality?
Before the surgery

During the surgery

(Wow... looking back they both are kind of lacking...maybe i was wrong but too deep to turn back )

I am still very hopeful of this anime and I will watch at least 2 more episodes, but what I am afraid of is that this goes the HaNaYaMaTa route where they give so much attention to something and don't even bother to give it the details it desperately needs.

I'm totally baffled about some ppl expectations.

I mean, did you guys really believe that they will show us scalpels actually opening skin, muscles and showing us real-life type hemorrhages?, or actual veins/arteries suturing? (;^ω^)

First of all, this is an anime, and not surgeon-level anatomy class, it would be too graphic. I mean, even on those american ER shows, they can only show limited footage about surgeries.

Second, the super-human skills that Black Jack do possess are just that, something that can't be detailed or animated, of course it would be an absurd effort to detail how he sutured an artery, how he put some blood vessels together or how he made some holes in the bones so he could implant a titanium support... Not to mention that it was a 4 hours surgery, we can't watch the whole procedure.

As many animes, to enhance the details we cannot see and to add a dramatic effect, producers sometimes remove backgrounds so we can focus on specific things, in the surgery case, we saw how Black Jack moved the suture and the needle so skillfully and fast it looked unreal, but that was the actual intention of producers, to be dramatic so we can focus on the emotions and not to learn how to do vessels micro suturing.

I don't know, probably ppl who are complaining are surgeons or they want to be surgeons and they got disappointed. But I'm pretty sure surgeons did enjoy the show even if they didn't learn how to do a 8+ hours surgery in 4 hours. (´・ω・)!

Finally that is how Black Jack anime series has been since the very beginning so it was a pretty awesome first episode.

Black Jack
watched only an episode here and there of the older series but never got into it and so I didnt know what to expect with this one.

I thought is was just ok, the scene at the rail tract was kinda stupid. Usually when the gate just go down , there is a bit of time to get in there and out

I thought the surgery part was has too much detail and not quiet accurate. Sorry a pediatric patient has smaller vessels and bones etc etc .dont want to go into detail there or else it will be a long post but the close gloving technique was pretty good I think it was unnecessary to focus too much on that surgery.I find it funny how they keep their hands up in an open position a lot lol.

The father in the end thinks everithing is fine and dandy that the surgery was a success when the battle is only half way .

The animation is pretty good overall.

Anyway this anime is banking on its numerous Black Jack followers.

Episode 2

And here, Hazama is about to kill someone to save another as an elder man is willing to give up his life to save his daughter. But seeing that he had to take a life to do the heart transplant that there was a lot of hesitation and doubt. But he was talked out of it and instead found a better solution to save both guys. There's that issue with what being a doctor is all about, and their job is to save people. That was pretty solid the way this operation went down all going to show that Hazama always finds a solution.

Well, I will say that the episode had a lot of manservice. I mean..the first half of the episode...yeah...

However, I did like the metaphor of the show though in particular with the heart and operation:

The power of hearts and transplants!

I'm liking where this series is going. I feel it has a good balance of drama, psychological, and aspects of surgeon situations you won't find too often in Anime! With being said, I enjoyed this episode. We got some development with our main character and he found a way not to become a murderer, which I thought was nice! I am looking forward to the next episode!
