So was searching for some images/gifs for ghost in the shell and came across an article very brief about up coming movies and apparently Disney wants to make a Ghost in the Shell live action movie. Its set to come out according to IMDB in 2017 sometime.

According to the article Scarlet Johansson is set to play Major Kusanagi.

I don't know how others feel about this but I feel for a old action sci fi gritty anime/movie it should be done by someone else.
Not that I hate Disney but they don't usually make things rated R. Well lets hope they don't totally kill the movie and do injustice to the originals and the newer anime that have come out in the last year.

What are your thoughts on this?

Who knows, it could be good. Plus, no one is forcing GiTS fans to watch it. If it's adapted correctly, great, if not, oh well.

Mmm...

People were yucky about Disney picking up StarWars, now the majority of those people love them for it after the Force Awakened trailers.

I honestly don't see what they could do with Ghost in a Shell considering it's mature content. Just like the Deadpool movie, it would feel weird if it wasn't rated R.

And like you said OP, Disney isn't well known for making R rated movies. We'll just have to wait and see if they actually decide to go through with it.

I'll wait until it comes out, I never voice any opinion without actually having seen it.
Dragonball Evolution was a good lesson, the movie is terrible but few movies managed to keep me laughing non-stop for 90 minutes.

Same goes for Double Dragon, Mortal Combat and the Guyver adaptations from the 90's and both Street Fighters.

I hope the live action idea just doesn't happen, anime live action films do not do well.

Does Disney still have Touchstone Pictures? That studio made R rated movies as well as PG-13. But yeah, even if Touchstone makes it, it would seem odd for them to make a GITS movie.

Technically its Pixar doing it, but since it's a subsidiary of Disney its pretty much the same thing.

I don't understand why Pixar which is known for animations of all things would produce a live action of an anime..it's quite perplexing really.

I guess that would be like a non animation studio doing an animated version of a non animated movie.

To be clear, it isn't Disney but DreamWorks that is planing on making the movie. DreamWorks has a distribution deal with Disney, but that doesn't mean Disney is involved in making the movie.

So, DreamWorks could make this an R-rated film, but I expect they won't. They'll probably aim for PG-13 so they can pull in a bigger teen audience.

Well one of the articles I had read at one time specified it was Disney/Pixar doing it and that was after I had already made the thread. Still doesn't change much. We will have to see how it goes and hope for the best. Personally their first choice seemed a better option but they had to go with Scar Jo.

Am I the only one that looks forward to seeing this?

Don't get me wrong, I dislike most American companies taking random good anime films and butchering it but I mean, they can't do as badly as the Dragonball film.
