Do people actually learn Japanese through the anime they watch?

Well, yeah. It's hardly the equivalent of a formal language study, however.

I actually can understand the rough idea of a conversation in Japanese because of it. It's weird, but whenever I'm spoken to in Japanese my mind automatically takes key words and phrases out so I can kinda comprehend what they're saying to me. It's probably a bit lower than my level of Spanish because I studied that for 3 years in school, but they're fairly close. Now speaking, yeah I won't even bother trying, I'll just look like an idiot lol. I only say common phrases and really simple sentences if I need to, or if I had a bit to drink.

Why would you want to learn Japanese through watching anime?

Not really. I study the language as a hobby and all anime does is that it helps me confirm what I've learned, to an extent.

Some people may, but since I focus on the subtitles most of the time and don't listen too carefully to the Japanese words. But I do know how to say a bunch of random words thanks to anime.

A little bit. I know a few handful of terms that I didn't know before watching anime. Not enough to hold an actual conversation though.

I decided to learn Japanese after watching a crap ton of anime. The anime didn't help just by itself. After I learned a little and started watching the shows without subtitles, i started learning a lot. After I had learned a lot without anime, i learned, even more, with anime. It's one of those things you would use as a tool. I also tried to a program called Japanese through anime by Ken Cannon. The program didn't work for me, but hey it might work for you.

As a lot of people already said, it helps in learning a few words and expresssions but that's mostly it. I'm learning japanese at the university and there's no way I could have learned as much by just watching anime.

I pick up a few words but I could never understand a full conversation just by watching anime.

Anime is great for Vocabulary when paired with other Japanese study to give you an understanding of grammar and sentence structure. I've learnt so much from it that it has actually allowed me to know enough words to understand decent conversation and converse with my host family quite well. which i wouldnt have been able to do with just what I've learnt in class.

On it's own it's pretty useless mind you.

After 3000 hours, I can understand 1 of the 10 words, which are spoken maybe...Most easy words. I recommend animé and studying formal.

saying that you learned Japanese from anime is like saying you learned Russian after hearing deresute's Anastasia say
Да (yes), Нет (no) and Спасибо (thank you). technically yes, you learned something, but that's a far cry from saying that you actually learned the language (from watching anime).
