The Android app has HD support for a while now. However, it's adaptive playback, which means that if the app deems your internet connection quality as insufficient to support the higher data volume of the HD playback, it will give you a lower resolution stream.

What device do you use again? And how does it connect to the internet?

It's a "el cheapo" tablet from Best Buy . Digiland is the maker , 10.1" screen . It plays up to 720p and outputs via HDMI up to 1080p . Maybe I need to hook it up to my 1080p TV . A HD indicator would of been nice though . I'm on my home Wi-Fi , 20m down.

You can normally easily distinguish the HD playback from the SD playback on tablets by the image quality.

Ok , after more watching it must be HD . When I watch a show that's in 480p there are black bars on the side (as well on my Rokus) . When I watch a 1080p or 720p show it's full screen . Now too bad my Blu-ray player is still not HD ..It shows in full screen (meaning 480p , I hope).

With small but higher resolution screens becoming the norm, and depending on the quality of the animation, it's hard to tell sometimes. On a 720p 4.5" screen, there's not much difference between SD and 480p, and even 720p isn't substantially clearer on a small screen. There are devices in the 5" range that are 1080p and even quad HD already.

Also, it's hard to tell what level of HD someone is getting. I have a 10" device with a screen slightly over minimal 1080p (think it's 1920x1200) and I have no idea if I'm looking at 1080p or 720p. I've had a couple of occasions where the stream adapts and clearly drops to a lower resolution, but even then, I don't know what's it's adapted to (did I drop from 720 to 480 or 1080 to 720).

I like the auto adapting *a lot*, but it would be nice if when you touch the screen that causes the autoplay option and timeline to show, if it would indicate what level of HD you're currently on (SD/360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p). Even make this selectable. Sometimes I'm skimming a watched episode for information or dialogue and I don't want or need to wait for the buffering for a 720p or 1080p stream, and SD is far faster and easier. Similarly, a person with a 7" 1080p device and sufficient bandwidth still may find 720p more than sufficient and wants to free up some network for other tasks, devices, or household members.

As far as I know the streams for Android go up to 720p max currently.

I should've known. Crunchy likes to put more compression in 1080p video than most Android devices' processors can currently handle. Sucks, 'cause my tablet's resolution is 1080p. By the time I get one with a good enough processor for Crunchy 1080p, it'll have a 4x screen. >_>

is adaptive playback still the only option?
there needs to be an option to choose what video quality you want so i don't blow through my cellular data before the end of the month. with the standard resolution i'm usually at about 4gb a month but on HD i blow through 6GB about half way into the month
