I really don't understand why people gossip about this stuff. News about them are inevitable but why are people so preoccupied with spreading these frivolous negative gossip. Most of these comments are not just "I don't like so and so's fashion, acting etc" it's

"this person is blah blah blah, and they did blah blah because blah blah blah not that pretty and blah snobby, blah shallow blah why is this person famous blah — but most importantly I don't care"

I think because their own lives are so boring, so they do that sorta stuff.

Well, gossip has a certain social information and bonding aspect to it. The gossiping about celebrities allows a little bonding with others if you are gossiping about this stuff, but is safer in terms of personal negative consequences.--such as could happen if you gossip in a critical way about people who are in or close to your own social circles.

Maybe they are jealous, frustrated or just don't like the celebrity. There are plenty of celebrities that are awful people. But I agree, sometimes people should just stop gossiping. I doubt that most famous people care about that and it's only giving them more attention.

People are obsessive about anyone famous or rich, they feel the need to follow their status as if they were friends, not just on Facebook or twitter but in general. So when they do something that makes news of course they're going to gossip about it. People aspire to be famous musicians, longing to get signed under a label, be a famous actor work in Hollywood, but really most people don't know the gritty truth behind the business itself and what it takes to get there.

The grass is always greener on the other side, as the old saying goes.

They find them interesting, I guess. I don't understand why since I have no interest in celebrities. I hardly remember any of their names. I usually only remember them as characters from movies/shows I like. Heh..

Some people lead mean, miserable lives. They (think they) can only raise themselves by lowering others. (Look what ${celebrity} did. I would never do that, so I'm better than they are.)

I'm not interested in celebrity gossip at all. In fact, most of the time when people try and share celeb gossip with me, my reply is "who is that? a singer? an actor?" and they come back with "OMG! YOU'VE NEVER HEARD OF THEM?! WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?!"

What is drama but life with the dull bits cut out?

The lives of normal people can be compared to as shows from the Slice of Life genre. Celebrities are pretty much the Drama genre. Discussing drama is much more interesting than SoL.

That being said, you really must be a sad person to gossip. However, it's sometimes done unintentionally primarily to fill in conversation gaps.

Yeah, I don't know why. But sometimes it can be entertaining to read and such. I guess people just like to stick their nose in other people's business.

^ This.

Also, it allows people to feel closer to celebrities. It makes them more on their own level, instead of something unobtainable and out of reach.

I always feel left out when people begin gossip. I have no idea who any of them are.

Very good explanation that coupled with venting out frustration's in the own life through gossip.
Another reason would be that people have this uncanny tendency to have a larger than life, almost god like view of people who are celebrities or important it's like that person loses their humanity and when ever they do something that doesn't conform to what essentialy a god would do their shot down from the "sky" and treated lower than a regular human as punishment for not living up to what the majority wanted them to be. It's kinda of funny when you think about it, the complexity of society is simply dumb for alot of things.
