This would be an obvious downside to fame. I make it a point to avoid gossiping about people. I also avoid poking my nose in other people's business. I see no reason not to treat celebrities with the same courtesy I treat others. It is, however, easy to envy them. Perhaps envy leads to resentment leads to gossip.

They're just people with too much time on their hands.

I've always thought that people gossip and judge, the rich, beautiful, famous, and powerful, because many ordinary people feel they have so little control over their own formulaic lives. This gives many people a sense of parody. You stand in the supermarket checkout concerned about the money you're spending and your eyes gravitate to a lurid tale of lust and greed complete with a revealing cleavage shot and and a slit in a skirt that runs up well past mid thigh. You've just been transformed from your sordid reality to a fantasy realm where such mundanities as paying for groceries just doesn't exist. It's all a conspiracy/marketing that culminates when you reach for a cold overpriced beverage to add to your cart pondering whether a two headed space alien really did abduct and father 7 kittens with that guys brood mare.Absurdity sells.

The way I see it there always be gossiping. People also gossip about neighbours, family, acquaintances, co-workers etc and drama happens in communities too. Heck we even have a name for gossipers in the Caribbean, macomere (gossip woman, even though men do it too). I don't buy magazines. I don't necessarily recognise celebrities pictures either. I don't care about their business.

Well, gossip has a certain social information and bonding aspect to it. The gossiping about celebrities allows a little bonding with others if you are gossiping about this stuff, but is safer in terms of personal negative consequences.--such as could happen if you gossip in a critical way about people who are in or close to your own social circles.

Let's just say there's a certain........demographic of both columnists and fans of celebrity gossip, who like both the vicarious glitz of celebrities, AND the ability to giggle themselves silly over the spectator sport of watching Miley's latest meltdown, watching A-list stars have disastrous flop movies, or watching an old classic movie/TV star age ungracefully, as part of some implied "punishment" for being diva celebrities, let alone female ones.

Immature? Unquestionably. But goes with the demographic, as it's a rather unhealthy outlet for their own personal demons.

Yeah, I don't like it either. It does make a person look rather pitiful.

I personally keep out of gossip about anyone, but then again I'm not much of a person for Envy.

Let's face it, if we're reading celeb gossip, it's probably to get the proper dose of drama that we so crave. Because we view our own lives as hella uneventful and boring.

I think with any kind of gossiping it's a matter of boredom and/or unhapiness in their own life or mind. Jealousy perhaps as well?

I don't really mind people who talk about weird or dumb things but I do find it much worse when it comes to celebrities from Hollywood or something like that. It's just dumb and I don't really get it.
