I had to think about this one for a while. After all, I became a fan of portable games over twenty five years ago, thanks to the original Gameboy. So I tried to make a top five list... but it could change in the next few months.

1. The original DS. It had an amazing variety of software, from offbeat experimental games to remakes and reissues of time-tested classics. The three Dragon Quest remakes were all entertaining, and I'm still enjoying DQ9. Retro Game Challenge was a favorite. New Super Mario Bros had some flaws, but it was an enjoyable return to classic 2D platforming. Furthermore, I could use it to play ninety eight percent of Gameboy Advance carts. Finally, I rarely had complaints with its internal battery.

2. The Playstation Vita. Mostly because I have spent hundreds of hours enjoying the remake of Persona 4. The newest Lumines game is also a highlight. Also, it supports downloads of quite a few PS1 and PSP titles. Right now, there's about five or six lengthy story-driven games in my Vita queue, all waiting to be started.

3. The GBA SP. In other words, the flip phone style Gameboy Advance. It supported nearly all titles from previous Gameboys, had a long-lasting internal battery, and was not frustrating to look at. The system was great for resuming where I'd left off on the GBC remakes of Dragon Quest 1-3, and for enjoying the GBA remakes of Final Fantasy 5 and 6.

4. The Playstation Portable. It was always hampered by its UMDs, which made many games less fun due to pauses and loading. Even so, there were a lot of quality games. Half Minute Hero was a nice surprise. Trails in the Sky was worth the wait. Loco Roco amused me. And there was a version of Lemmings which didn't cause much eye strain.

5. The SEGA Game Gear. It drained batteries rapidly, so I mostly played it with an AC adapter. Its software library wasn't all that great. However, one of three portable Shining Force games -- Sword of Hajya -- got a localization on the system. It introduced me to tactical games, and challenged me from the third battle all the way to the end. Also, there was a rather challenging 2D Sonic game and a rather tough action RPG called Ax Battler. The turn based game Defenders of Oasis was halfway decent.

I left out my iPod since almost any game drains its battery rapidly. Not a fan of virtual buttons. Also, just getting started in Android software, and I'm not sure what to make of titles that have DRM or free-to-play mechanics.

A good post, and I tip my hat to it, particularly for mentioning Retro Game Challenge, but I feel that one point in particular deserves a specific reply:

I said GBA before, but the GBA SP is the one that got – and still gets – the bulk of my time. I started playing GBA games (Fire Emblem!) on the Game Boy Player for the Game Cube, then graduated to the GBA SP, followed by the GBA Micro; I got an original GBA later as kind of a museum piece.

Special shoutout to the GBA version of Final Fantasy V for being quite possibly my favorite Squaresoft remake of anything ever.

I only recently got into handheld gaming because of all the traveling I do for work, but I absolutely love my 3DS. I have a Vita too and it looks beautiful, but I've only played one game on it (Persona 4 Golden). I bought FF10 and 10-2 for it, but I haven't gotten around to playing it.
