Why are you a feminist?
Posted 5/13/15 , edited 5/15/15
There's been a recent uhhh.. resurgence of feminist-related threads, so my interest in the topic has somewhat been revived. Anyway...

An interesting observation I've made is that every single self-proclaimed feminist I've come across had somehow always taken such pride in pointing out that they are NOT like those OTHER feminists, some even going so far as to say that those "radicals" or "tumblr feminists" are not real feminists and are just ruining feminism for everyone else. I have always found this interesting for two reasons: 1) it seems to me that some people find a kind of self-serving appeal in being some sort of feminist martyr and 2) I've never really understood why anyone would expect ANYONE to acknowledge a movement that cannot even agree on who is or isn't a "real" part of their group. It just boggles my mind, to be honest.

Well, everyone has been stating on another thread why they are "anti-feminist," but I think it's far more interesting to find out why people willingly choose to identify as a feminists.

So yeah, my question is: Are you a feminist? If so, why are you one? And why choose that specific label?

I am a feminist. Because I am for gender equality, which is what feminism is all about.

I am a feminist. Because the definition of feminism is "the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities". And I believe that to be common sense and that it's ridiculous that it isn't so.

Actually, it's really not. Feminism was established as a movement to give women equal rights / opportunities with men, which would be gender equality if women were grossly at a disadvantage. Unfortunately, that is not necessarily the case anymore. Well, at least not in modern western society. The word itself signifies a focus on women's rights as opposed to actual "gender equality." People like to throw around all these definitions and such saying that feminism is for equality while forgetting its origins. If anyone would read the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, they would find its sole focus on women's grievances against men.

The bolded part is basically why I don't care for any modern feminist unless they're talking about the correct version. Kudos to the women who know the right role and go after it. The rest need to fade away and quit causing headaches for everyone. They're annoying at best.

I don't actively support (not my problem so I'm not going to bother with it) anything like feminism or gay rights or whatever, but I do agree with it. You would think in this day and age it wouldn't be an issue, but here we are.

I believe women should be able to enjoy the same social status we men do. I choose the "feminist" label over other, more generalist terms for the same reason Thomas Kaplan named his organization "Panthera" rather than "Animalia." It's a specific movement focused on a specific set of issues.

I'm a sometimes ally at best. I prefer to call myself a Humanist. Some feminists will be offended saying that feminism is humanism. Not in my experience. There are times when feminism is only about redress or even advantage and often neglects some enqualities that affect men.

I'd use the label if there weren't the Feminazi's who are giving the worst name possible to feminism. Ive got relatives who were feminists way back in the day, and I agree women should have equal rights and all that because why shouldnt they? But let's be honest here, there's a lot of bad to the crew that runs with feminism, and a lot of "man hate" and other things that I just don't like at all.

Yeah but feminism is an established cultural movement that's been around for centuries. GG is hashtag movement that formed as a reaction to a women alleged sex life being published online.
