Having Ash stay the same age through 600+ episodes is much worse than what The Simpsons does, because pokemon is a linear progressing show throughout. The Simpsons can get away with it because they don't really reference stuff from way in the show's past. Anime fans expect a good story, characters etc from their shows, and Ash's age is a big thing that ruins the show in these regards.

My 10 reasons why Ash staying 10 years old sucks:
1. The show references the way-past, meaning the past is canon, making it very blatant that Ash should be older and that the story has failed to make sense.
2. There's tons of evidence that he should be more than 10 years old. Not going to try and list it because there's too much to list.
3. Young kids don't prefer 10 year old protagonists over teenage ones. Kids prefer watching things about teenagers, because teenagers are cool. You will not find any kids saying "I'm sure glad Ash is 10, so that I can relate to him!". 10 year olds want shows starring teens!
4. Writers, when the young generation stops watching Pokemon and the older loyal fans are your only hope, crap like Ash's age will ruin your chances at appealing to them, leaving you with nobody.
5. Ash's age makes it blatantly obvious that the writers are only using the anime to sell the games; if the anime was supposed to be standalone good, they would put more effort into the story.
6. Ten year olds don't have as much potential to be interesting characters as older chars...
7. Ash definitely seemed older in Hoenn and Sinnoh; he was very smart in Hoenn and looked older in Sinnoh. I thought for sure it was canon that he was older; they did everything except say it. It's almost like they changed his age back to 10 when they announced it in Unova.
8. Since Ash is young and inexperienced, he can't teach much to other characters, be much of a leader, or have as many meaningful lines. I mean he could if he was smart for his age, but he's not. Since you made him a dim character, you should have made him older to develop a more interesting personality by getting older.
9. Pokemon is the kind of show that develops a shipping fandom over time. And since the characters are 10..... just no.
10. Having a show about something so awesome as pokemon is one of the best concepts ever, and it only takes minimal writing skill to make it a solid show. Us fans don't ask for much from a pokemon show. All the writers had to do was not do anything ridiculously stupid and they'd be fine. The show could have been a masterpiece with only average writing. I've never seen a concept so wasted.

The scary thing is that Ash's age is only the second worst thing about the show. The worst thing being the extremely boring and repetitive Team Rocket appearences. I want there to be long arcs of no Team Rocket involvement whatsoever, so I can enjoy the pokemon journey without interruptions. Have dilemmas that don't freaking involve their boring schemes. And when they are involved, make it a multi-episode deal. I hate how they have to be inserted in every episode and dealt with by the end.

11. It leads to fans of the games being treated as creepers because the anime version is perpetually a kids' show that never grows up.

He's like Timmy Turner. He is forever young thanks to the wonders of televised animation.
