Freedom of speech was never meant as freedom from consequences. He sent a meme with an offensive word to a work account, and an employer has every right to discipline an employee that uses a potentially offensive phrase in the workplace or as part of a communication on a company device.

And for those saying that saying nigga isn't the same as saying nigger; why don't you go to out and video tape while you go say "Ah shit my nigga" to every black person you encounter. Then go back and see the look of disgust on peoples faces, that is if someone hasn't shoved the video camera down your throat. The colloquial use of "nigga" is an appropriation of a derogatory term by an oppressed class to lessen the power that the term holds. If you aren't part of that group, and especially if you are a member of the group of the oppressor, you don't get to play along. It's an inside thing.

So you just have to accept that when you use a term that has historically been used as a slur, there will be people who might be offended. And they have every right to be offended, they aren't being thin skinned or uptight.

Such a sad, humorless society we live in.

It's mostly just USA :P
And atm, the cops in both California and Miami (Florida) are mass murderers. The cops in California at least are bat shit crazy these days and should be put in jail. There has been a few sick cases in Miami too.

If a cop in Scandinavia did the same shit as the cops in California does these days, that cop would be in prison for sure.
In a rap video going around on FB there are scenes where the cops run people over. Scenes where the cops are hitting defenseless womans in their sides, and the woman was just standing in the middle of 2 cops o_O

I'll never visit USA, at least not until they get their shit sorted out. Besides, I'm probably not welcome into the states anymore, I've talked a lot of shit about USa lately, wouldn't be surprised if that's enough to not get into there nowadays :P
NSA is overreacting these days.

Maybe it was sarcasm.

Are you saying he made $17.78 an hour or less than $2 an hour? You might want to check your math again. Maybe I'm just reading this wrong.

Sorry $17.78 a day. Got it mixed up there

Edit: no got it right the first ten it would be $17.78 and $177.80 for one 10 hour shift.

Oh look, the USA is being very careful to suppress any signs of racism among police officers. It's good that we live in such a modern, progressive society.

What's this, nearly every reply in this thread is a bunch of ignorant culture hatred directed at one of the nicest places to live on the planet? Typical. I start to see the merit of looking down on the plebs.

always found it funny how only black people can say "Nigga" as a friendly gesture or to friends. But as soon as a white guy or any other race says the same word, all of a sudden its raciest and offensive. "Nigga" isnt even the full offensive word that the slave owners used towards their great great great grandfathers.... just takes out the ER and puts an A to replace it. Now that the history is outta the way. This was stupid was a joke and they took it wrong. Thus why i dont bather making jokes to people only to my close friends. U.S Society cant take a joke anymore.

What the... well he is an officer and have to fallow their internal rules. End of the story. that would be the case if was by Ofiice pone but from personal? come on.

It might have come from a personal phone but it went to a department paid phone.

One unpaid 10 hour shift is a small price to pay for the possible consequences of it getting out there.

The police have to be especially careful these days, or at least they should be, to not show any signs of racism. Anyone who thinks this is going overboard must not realize how bad things have gotten between police and the minority communities in the US. While I believe both sides need to fix it together the police still need to avoid this kind of stuff like the plague right now till things calm down more. People have no common sense and are ready to riot over anything they can find to justify it even a little.

Remember when codes of conduct have verbal warning? before sanctions? so if the case he could be recidivist in the same matter?

Unfortunately the idiots out there would never be satisfied with just a verbal warning. Most of them would probably be calling for him to be fired. In order to help keep the peace police need to look like they are taking a harsh stance on anything remotely racist.

Just to be clear I do in fact think racism is a big problem but I don't really think that this should have been an issue at all. The only reason it is an issue is because it is on the department phone records and so if anything happens and it was seen in an investigation it would, regardless of whether it should or not, reflect very badly on the police.

If I didn't make sense...I don't really care right now. It's not a good day.

Just a heads up guys but make sure to keep the discussion on topic and not go too far down the rabbit hole. While a curse word here and there is fine, a whole sentence of them or comments that can be misconstrued in a racist way when the whole thread is about a joke a guy made that got misconstrued in a racist way is maybe a bit much.

That said, punishment fit the bill if you ask me. He was being dumb, and the language his supervisor used in her replies implied he had maybe crossed this line before. One shift of pay is a slap on the wrist and will hopefully remind him that officers of the peace are (and should be) held to a higher standard.

professionalism............*company* equipment/property...............a word people can take offense to, distributed to said *company* equipment/property.

what is it that's not clicking?, the company phone should'nt even be used to Boast about gambling, whether or not it is right to use said word

is not the question.....was being suspended for a days pay justified?, considering that Police departments country wide are being scrutinized for their conduct and "racism" claims, i say yes, you put your Chief in a position where their conduct can be scrutinized ,not just yours.... so yeah...professionalism

Beautiful.

Some people have no common sense. The fact that it was an image macro is just the comedic cherry on top.

I do stuff like this all the time with my boss and coworkers. It all depends on the work environment, regardless of the job type.

to each his own but i personally think it is very unprofessional regardless of the job, i do not like the idea of getting "chummy" with bosses or even co-workers >.>

which is why i laugh at this guy. and esp sending that sort of thing when the media is eating up every single white cop vs. black man story there is right now.

should he have been suspended for what he said? idk. should he be suspended for being stupid? well...

I'm surprised it even made the news. I guess someone decided to run their mouth off to them. There's nothing wrong with what he said, but you do have to be careful to who you say things to. Apparently he isn't as "chummy" with his boss as he thought, so yeah, he's an idiot. Then again, he's a cop. High IQ isn't exactly required for them.

for 1 word, i dont agree with that, the 1st amendment is the right to free speech, weather or not you or i like it he has the right to say that

It garuentees you a right to speak not a right to not be criticized for what you said, businesses and especially public offices need to keep good PR with the public and as we all know PR between African Americans and Cops is not doing well right know.

No government came down and restricted this mans speech only a business which they have every right to do.

well what their doing isnt criticism, being suspended from a job isnt criticism, that them saying you cant do this so were are getting to give you a punishment so you wont do it later (youll learn from you mistake)
