well what their doing isnt criticism, being suspended from a job isnt criticism, that them saying you cant do this so were are getting to give you a punishment so you wont do it later (youll learn from you mistake)

Well there punishing him for it which in a worker-boss relationship is entirely valid.

no its not shes trying to obstruct his right to free speech, so shes suspending him as in saying dont do this again and he has the full right to say that

Free speech does not apply in a worker-boss relationship. Of course he has every right to say that but she has every right to punish him for it. Go up to your boss and say the n-word and see how he reacts.

I think some of you have the wrong idea about the 1st Amendment.

The 1st Amendment prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, impeding the free exercise of religion, abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances.

That's it. Nothing more.

Sure you can go around and say what you want. By all means be my guest. What some of you fail to realize is there are consequences for some things.

For instance, if I go up to a guy and start yelling obscenities to his face he's probably going to either hit me or retaliate in some not so nice manner.

If I go online and start spewing utter lies and whatever I can think of to hurt someones reputation, I'm probably going to get sued.

The phrase "think before you speak" would serve many people well. Say what you want, but be ready to deal with the consequences. The 1st Amendment isn't the only legislation out there after all.

No im saying here that she has the right to do what she wants business wise. Personally I wouldnt want my officers throwing around racial slurs off duty.

What a dumb thing to suspend someone for. The superior honestly thinks words have inherent meaning? No, the meaning is derived from the context, but apparently they lack the intellect to know that.

yea well it was a private conversation, saying that phrase dosent warrant a suspension, she could have just said thats not appropriate and please dont do it again, on when it comes to the police force you cant call that her business its part of the government, its not her place to decide that

no she has to get clearance and she cant suspend someone for something that isnt related to work, he was off duty, while on duty she may have some right to allow or block what he can and cant say but not hes not even working
