It's not about offense. Unmoderated forums tend to lose value fairly quickly. The forums would likely become a wasteland of trolls and shitposting.

Oh, you mean like 90's Usenet, and YouTube Comments?
I remember those Usenet days, friend; most here weren't alive back then, and only looking to some shining mythological legend.

The more specifically that a forum's discussions are tailored to a particular niche group--and therefore harder to participate in, unless you're one of the round-table fans who know your stuff--the less likely it's going to be troll-invaded. Simply because the people who go there want to talk about the topic.
The "easier" and "more democratic" you make a discussion forum to wander into off the street without fear of censorship, the lazier posters you're going to get. It's the Yahoo!Answers Rule: There is an direct ratio between Free Entry and Idiot Graffiti--Sooner or later, a troll is going to find the water-level where he can post.

Notice how comparatively few troll threads we get when we compartmentalize info to the Anime and Manga threads, but put up a forum for HS/college kids to discuss "anything", and notice how many 90's-nostalgic header-bomb threads we get of "Have you ever killed yourself to impress a girl?"

Or it will just erupt into a hate-fueled pissing match. That is more of the norm unfortunately. The mods are pretty good and spotting that kind of shit, even if some go a little overboard sometimes.

I've seen unmoderated web sites before and they all sucked: they are full of of bored people, who believe they are very brave just because they are behind a screen, trolling and calling names each other all the time without saying anything smart. In other words, getting ride of mods is a really bad idea and I doubt that will happen given that it's a commercial website and therefore they have to protect their image.

Anyway, here the mods aren't as strict as they could be in my opinion.

The mods have helped me out a couple times, moving topics I've posted to the wrong board and deleting long conversations with trolls that I can't help but try and calm down. I appreciate what they do, even if I don't always agree with it.

I mean as long as whatever said doesn't hurt people directly, like perhaps anything regarding racism or homophobia or transphobia etc.

Because those aren't "just opinions". Sure, have opinions about 'em, nobody can stop you, just don't disrespect people for who they are, their differences, and what they can't change, ya feel?

I Think the site rules and mods enforcing them serve a vital role in keeping this one of the better places to read and post.

Although I do agree that offensive stuff shouldn't always be moderated, there's a line between outright flaming/derailing and merely saying something that just so happens to be offensive to some people. The former is just bad for any forum and should be discouraged. Of course, I think people should be encouraged to be respectful but mods shouldn't be too strict.

To me, people who constantly point out things that offend them are strange. "That's offensive" or "that offends me" doesn't give anyone special privileges. It's nothing more than a whine. Only overly sensitive people can't deal with it and only they care. Sounds horrible but that's how things are. I don't mind when people offer compelling and well-thought-out reasons but, more often than not, they don't.

I think the mods here are doing a fine job. They don't seem ban-happy and seem to be reasonable and chill people.

Some people are just too sensitive to be on the internet. I'm sensitive but even I know that on the internet not many people give a shit. Thank goodness for that.
