I've seen a few anime with harem themes, normally one male some how ends up in an all girl something but some times a guy just for no reason gets surrounded by women.
Normally Harems ruin interesting shows for me, one example is Infinite Stratos. It could have been a cool show about kids learning to fight Mech suits but instead it was a guy ends up in an all girl school that happens to train them to fight mech suits.
Some times it doesn't bother me like Akame Ga Kill The main character joined a group of mostly women but the romantic relationships didn't detract from the main goals of the characters and was normally ignored in most cases.
I bring this poll question up because of a newer anime "Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon" that I want to like because of it's premise but every time I watch it I'm disappointed because of the Harem portion of it.

It all comes down to fanservice. Sure it works for some anime, but sometimes it doesn't.

The whole harem theme has been done to death. Time to move on with something new.

More often then not, personally, I find harems bothersome and overdone. For example, it's part of the reason I stopped watching SOA, and I couldn't bring myself to watch more than a handful of episodes of Nisekoi.

That being said, maybe I'm just biased as a female because I tend to like reverse harems (Ouran High School Host Club, Fruits Basket, Wallflower, etc) a lot more than I like harems.

I personally don't think it generally does, I feel like it can be overwhelming.

most of the time it detracts from the story. sometimes it can be funny but if every episode is the same joke at a very random time i really dont see the point

On a general basis, I would assume no. Most harems tend to have alot of ecchi. That is fine and all though the lack of a fine storyline and progression is what usually coincides.

No. I personally can't stand the Harem, unless there is a REASON. If the guy is attractive and smooth (a player) then it doesn't bother me, because that's believable. Just make the reason why that guy has a harem believable. But when you take someone like Kirito or Tatsumi, who's personality is as bland as a dry sponge, and then make all these girls magically fall in love with him... yea, that's annoying. I also can't stand it when anime have women chasing a man who acts completely oblivious to her advances. He sees her in a bikini, and she's like, "so, what do you think?" and then he's like, "who, me??? What am I supposed to be thinking about???"

Well, I have noticed a direct correlation between PLOT and FANSERVICE, so...

Fanservice is great but when a series is solely defined by it there's just no point...

I mean, if it takes away from the plot (which harems usually do) then it's got to be a no.

Fanservice is awesome but harems are just a bunch of "love interests" exclusively defined by their lust for the completely average (and often annoying) protagonist.

It depends. If the characters in the harem are likable and have a valid reason for falling for the protagonist.
