Terrible.

Real-world physics and natural laws don't stop working for people with less strength. That's just how it is. This puts lives in danger just because someone was butthurt about her body not being as strong as those of the men qualified to be in the fire department. Misguided decision is misguided.

Why stop at 33? 40 year olds should be able to be firefighters. There shouldn't be a fitness test at all if people aren't required to pass it....

How in Texas are you at risk from a firefighter in NYC?You're more at risk because of your colloquial attitudes and your adherence to grabber generated media.

I didn't expect this, thought it was about the climate or something.. Although this is scary as hell too.

But anyways, there have been people trying to manipulate things into getting what they want since the dawn of time. The real shame here is that the City council agrees to it, like they're afraid of an onslaught of feminazis.

I hope she dies in a fire... She deserves what's coming when she's doing stupid things like this. If she wants to get into the firefighting business then let her work at the fire contact center or something. Don't let her risk both her life and others just 'cause she thinks "sexual discrimination"... Even if it's not

Rebecca Wax wants to be a firefighter but she is over the age limit; (it is 29 but she is 33) so she cried to the city counsel which made the NYFD forced to raise the age limit to 35. so when the she didn't pass the fitiness test (more than once) she went back to City Council to complain to them about how the NYFD didn't let her be a firefighter just because she is a woman. so NYFD is forced to lower their test standards to avoid getting sue for sex discrimination. now if women pass 2 out of the 3 test even if they didn't pass the fitness test then they will become a firefighter...... now lives are in great risk...
all this because she wants to be a firefighter....

Sad thing is all the women who did hit those standards and above are probably ticked at claims of sexism. All the training and hard work people sometimes go through to get in to physical demanding jobs and some random person doesn't want to face reality so out for the threats.

*beats head against desk*

I am a feminist, and I do not support allowing someone who fails functional tests such as rescuing people in zero visibility and climbing in full gear to graduate from firefighter training programs. If you are not physically capable of doing the work you've set out to do you shouldn't be doing it. Adjustment of physical fitness standards to account for physical differences between men and women is acceptable to an extent, but that's a decision which ought to be made by referring to the recommendations and needs of the armed forces, fire departments, police departments, and so on. Adjustments to gear specifications to account for these physical differences might be in order as well, but only if the adjustments can be made in such a way as to avoid compromising their ability to perform their intended function.

I think its okay. Businesses do generally respond well...the decision is hardly irrational. Any fear of stigmatization for the women is likely to to be short lasting as their individual performance will hold more sway eventually. Those who act in a self-interest manner tend to exit a faster. this could very well be a simple lesson.

There are worse things happening, I hardly think people are going to be this stupid in the future. I hope.

I mean, it is kinda throwing a wrench into feminism's reputation by "pulling that card", but it's whatever.
