Hello! :)

I'm interested in learning to draw, particularly anime style characters but also other things like the pretty backgrounds you'd find in anime etc. So I have two questions.

1. Can anyone recommend some good online tutorials or even books for me to learn some drawing theory and practice it?

2. Are there any drawing groups on crunchyroll or a similar site which is fairly active that you recommend I join?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me

Hi, there! You're in luck!

Growing up I did not have the resources available now on the internet, and books on how to draw anime were uncommon as ...well, watching anime (It was a "geeky and uncool" thing to do back then )

If you're just starting out it's a good idea to master the basics and fundamentals because in the long run you will be able to draw more complicated pieces. Anyone can pick up a pencil and draw a recreation of their favorite anime on a piece of paper, BUT the secret to being a successful anime artist is learning the different styles of both manga and anime (For example: Funimation has a completely different anime art style than CLAMP ) , mastering your basic fundamentals (drawing eyes, hair, hands, or learning that anime body proportions are different then manga or real life body proportions.)

Don't worry too much about creating an individual style at first because you will find that you'll quickly develop it the more you draw.

Most importantly dont' give up! Pratice! Practice! Practice! Anyone can be a great artist if they have the determination and dedication.

Here are a couple of links to help get you started!

Be sure to check YouTube! TONS of Tutorials on there! And you are MORE than welcome to ask me for further advice, or art constructive criticism, or even a mentor if you need personal instruction.

Here's an example of my work then and Now: LOL

Thank you! That was very helpful :)
I just want to say that your drawing now is fantastic! I hope someday if I practice hard enough I'll get to your level.

Thanks again for the post, you put a lot of thought into it!

Draw from life. While you may want to draw anime/manga type of art, you really should experiment with more than just cartoons. Build a strong foundation as an artist.

It took you 15 years to reach that level, or is it just drawn in 2015?

Because that is not worth 15 years of practice even though it is good.
