i think its just a matter of diff in accents...tat's wat make us unique isnt it? if they want to so-call critisise us, they should really nt make it public...taiwan's situation itself is already quite bad, earning the anger of us singaporeans really doesnt make them any way better -.-

Yah accents sure make us unique. At it is also accents that Singaporeans are always expose to. Just imagine our nation is constantly bombarded by so many different groups of people in this world and guess what we Singaporeans adapt pretty fast to any new accent we hear. We tend to adapt and soon begin to understand easily just imagine your lecturer from other countries such as England (even in england there are so many accents such as the mancunian, Lancashire), china, india, etc.

whoa... i read about this in the newpaper... man... i had to restrain myself from uttering a whole string of expletives... haha... and may i point out that the way the man in the video clip said "dance" is the American pronunciation... which if we want to be fussy... isnt the proper way to pronounce it... so he should really not grouse about the way other's speak English... since the English language is spoken with different accents and has been modified in many countries of the world; in a sense, British English has been murdered by almost every country it's spoken in, even it's own. Furthermore, i doubt that his two months here, or the brief period spent by any of the other guests on that show, gave them enough exposure to the English spoken here. Singaporeans can speak proper English. I should know coming from a school which is deemed very "ang moh"- not the people, but the culture. haha... But seriously, what is the whole hullabaloo about Singaporean English? Why look at ours? Nothing is Perfect anyway. You might as well look at the way PRC people speak English, or those from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Africa, even the USA. And, one should always not forget to notice the log in one's eye instead of the splinter in anothers'. Personally, i don't mind the way Singaporeans speak English. So what if others find it a tad difficult to grow accustomed to it? Isn't that the same in every country? So, GO SINGLISH! AND SINGAPOREAN ENGLISH!

personally i've been exposed to quite a number of accents of english in sch, Viet, philipines, canadian, british, american and other PRCS, at first i had to strain to understand but is gets easier when you're used to it....this point i totally agree with shoushin...

imagine if you were really to speak the way the taiwanese in the vid clips says, it'll be totally weird and ppl look at you with a are-you-crazy look -.- one example: "uncle"auntie"....its nt the proper pronunciation when we singaporeans say it and we know that, but its just plain WEIRD if we go low at the second syllables, and when we actually pull up a notch on the last syllables of certain words, its coz we're asking a question, not making a statement (the way taiwanese pronounced)...

and partial fault lies in the way that guy speaks, its nt even the standard of how singaporeans ACTUALLY speaks...no matter how bad we are, we dont pronounce "thanks" as "dance", it was kinda hilarious when i realise wat he meant when he said "dance"...

they really should critique themselves first b4 they critique us...their english standard isnt half as good as they think they are...

EDIT - can anyone tell me wats the "dance" guy's name and his blog URL?

i was following this story out of boredom and came across the blogs of the few ppl in the short clip.. the "dance" guy had actually posted an apology to this matter on his blog... and sad to say, quite a number of our fellow singaporeans had been throwing verbal abuses at him, some even curses him... somemore on chinese new year man... This is starting to make us singaporeans look bad...

Arroy looks so pathetic. Anyway they are at fault and this is the fact. Some comments they gave on national tv was really too exaggerating. Like the "auntie uncle part" and weiru's "hurry up". Arroy mention that it was just a "笑果", but for that "笑果" you got to criticise Singaporeans on National TV don't you think its a little too much?

But i still love taiwan dramas and variety shows!! Teeheeheee~

well... he made us look bad first right? haha... but yeah... i guess we shouldnt verbally abuse and curse him... thats kinda stooping a bit too low... take the highroad eh? but its kinda redundant for him to insult someone and then apologize isnt it? i mean thats like slapping a person and saying... oh yeah... i know its wrong (or i had no idea that it would be offensivve) so im sorry... still, we shall show how gracious we are and accept the apology ne? haha... but its kinda good to know that Singaporeans would actually speak out against such criticisms, just or unjust... it looks like we do have some pride and identity in our country after all...

If we start hurling verbals then its like admitting that our english standard aint good at all. Since we all agree our english standard is better than what he thinks, we should just *LOL at the bottom of our hearts* cause that critism aint true at all. Blame it on his inability to understand.

why would hurling verbal insults prove our standard of English isn't good? It may prove that we are uncouth... well... it is one way to react... not the best... i admit... haha...

it just reflect badly on our way of handling the issue. i would rather let other ppl think our english is weak then let them think our ppl as.... i dunno how to describe... uncivilized?
