Can anyone recommend to me some older shows with good romances in them? (Say anything before 2006.)

I've seen a few anime from the early 2000s that I really liked (Aishiteruze Baby, Please Teacher), and a few that were okay (Chobits, Ai Yori Aoshi, Love Hina, Ah My Goddess... all were fine, but none as good as their manga). But I've seen nothing from the 80s or 90s.

I'm not picky about genre. as long as it has a solid romance embedded in it: ecchi, slice of life, harem, even action (if it's something like SAO or Eureka Seven that's built around a romance, that is). My only requests are that the show comes to a some kind of resolution about the romance, and that it doesn't end in tragedy (the whole "watching terminally ill people fall in love" trope always just leaves me depressed, and I don't find it especially enjoyable).

Thanks in advance!

One difficulty you will find with looking for older titles is that most are not currently licensed, so legitimate versions are hard to come by outside of second hand stores.

Kimagure Orange Road is a classic 80's romantic comedy (with the twist that the main character's family has psychic powers). It involves a love triangle between the male lead and two female school friends but it does reach a conclusion. It has a pilot episode, 48 episode TV series, 8 episode OVA series and 2 movies.

If you can find them, watch in the order of the TV series, OVA series, 1st movie (I Want to Return to That Day) and 2nd movie (Shin KOR Summer's Beginning). The plot of the pilot episode was adapted into episode 46 of the TV series so it would perhaps be best to watch it after that point.

Blue Seed is an action series from the mid-90s about sentient plant monsters and humanity's attempts to stop them. Key to the fight are a pair of twin teenage girls, who have inherited an ancient power able to suppress the plants, but the first twin goes missing during the opening scene. The romantic element comes from one of the guardians of the twins and his feelings for them. There is a 26 episode TV series followed by a 3 episode OVA series.

Thanks for the recommendations!

I remember reading something about Kimagure Orange Road, awhile back--I think I got distracted watching and then reading Ah My Goddess, and then completely forgot about it. Blue Seed is new to me, but it sounds interesting.

I'll see if I can track them both down. And if anyone else has anything, I'm all ears!

If you don't mind other genres there are 3 titles I grew up on I'd like to point out...

1. Red Photon Zillion - The story revolves around 3 young adults fighting against an alien invasion. the 3 end up in a love triangle that culminates in an actual wedding.

2. Starblazers/Yamato - numerous romances over the years aren't just back stories but part of the main stories.

3. Robotech (Macross, Southern Cross, Mospeada) - The first Macross series alone has 2-3 ongoing romances, 1 of which is a triangle, and actually reaches a conclusion. Pretty much every series has numerous couples meeting, triangles forming and both good and bad endings for couples. In one recent movie we even get to see the youngest couple in the first series star as older adults with children.

While all three are considered space operas they're equal parts drama, romance and action.
