Let's say your best friend (or whoever's closest to you) is either severely depressed or is going through a really hard time. Now he/she is about to jump off a building. You're close enough to where you could probably run up to the roof and stop them in time.

So do you stop them or do you just let them die? (this is considering that they may or may not listen to you)

I would stop her. Definitely. I don't care if I have to run up a couple of flights of stairs to do it. I don't want her to die.

Also: What if the person about to jump WASN'T your best friend/whoever's closest to you?

Would you still try to save them?

I probably would, or at least attempt to, considering the fact that I don't really know what they're going through... (meaning I don't know what goes on in their life)

Lol I had a friend who tried to commit suicide, so I drove to his house and beat the shit out of him :|.

We were closer friends afterwards. I didn't think words would have worked in that situation as he would most likely commit suicide after I left, i think the fact I actually beat him up made him realize I cared enough about him that I would actually get that pissed off.

He hasn't tried committing suicide since, but he is just as depressed.

I would definitely say stop them.

I tried to commit suicide before and my girlfriend at the time stopped me and im pretty happy she did. Life gets better. I suffer from clinical depression so I know what its like feeling like your in the gutter, but suicide is probably the worst way out of it.

I don't know honestly. It might make me a terrible person but I've known so many people who were depressed and suicidal that I have become pretty numb to it. I don't know if I would try and talk them out of it or if I would just want to sit with them as they decided. Hell, I might even consider joining them so they weren't alone depending on what kind of day I was having.

well, nothing really can prepare you for what it feels like to be dying. i tried to commit suicide once and failed, but it was damn close. that feeling... it changed me forever. i will admit, i still get suicidal alot, but now i know what it feels like to be on deaths door, and it really really really changed my idea of suicide. all in all, as weird as it sounds, i'm better off having come so close.

but as for the question, yeah i would stop them and tell them to wait untill after they had a good nights sleep.

I'm not very good with words, so I don't trust my ability to dissuade my friend from suicide. If this person is my best friend, I would try to stop them, but if they aren't I'm probably less likely to try as hard. If I don't know this person, or we are just acquaintances at work or something, then I doubt I would try to stop them.

I don't know, man, does the building have an elevator? Pretty important detail to leave out if we're trying to decide if it's worth the effort.

I would recommend watching this video to see if random strangers would help. At the very least taxi drivers are good guys.

Now if it was my best friend knowing him he would jump if I try to rush and pull him off so my strategy would be to simply sit down on the edge of the building and have him come to my side or stay where he's at and have a nice conversation. Find out what his problem is and listen to him after that I would tell him it's his choice and walk away, but before I walk in the door let him know that if he goes through with it I would be very annoyed at having to find someone else I could have decent conversations with while gaming."we really could have good conversation while multitasking"
Now if i'm correct he would feel guilty and follow after me. If not well...

I'd stop them of course. It doesn't matter who it is. Nobody should take their own life.
No matter what the circumstances are.

No one is permitted to leave if I can't. That person's probably going to want to jump before I reach them. I run very fast, am a very angry person, and I'm more than tough enough to bear with breaking my scrawny knuckles if it means beating the shit out of someone trying to take the easy way out.

.. *sigh* Yes, that includes women.

It all comes down to living a life without regrets. Inaction is the worse type of regret, y'know.

Of course, doesn't really matter who it is, I would yank a stranger away from the edge and give them a smack upside the head, if possible. If they look like are going to jump off as I approach then I would probably have to rely on my words. No one wants to see someones sadness rob them of life.

I've had a friend or two that I talked away from their suicidal plans, so I hope that I learned enough about the situation to help save other people too.

I'd have a debate with them. Not going to try and stop them though. I just like to see how people rationalize their decisions.
