I ran a benchmark on DirectX 12 recently the results are pretty crazy. This is on a overclocked i7-2600k (4.4 Ghz,) STRIX GTX 970 running at stock speeds. This was run on 3DMark's API Overhead test @ 2560 x 1440.

DX 11 Multi Threaded FPS 34.5 @ 70656 draws per frame

DX 12 FPS 35.2 @ 319488 draws per frame

DX 12 FPS 29.7 @ 393216 draws per frame

Edit: Looking forward to seeing how Vulkan performs as well.

Windows 10 as far as I know. You'd have to grab the preview edition or wait for the free upgrade Microsoft has been touting.

The Windows 10 preview has DX 12 I had to revert back to 7 for the time being. The 10 preview does not support a lot of the audio codecs I use.

would windows 8.1 be suitable for windows 10?

I am having a lot of wifi adapter issues with limited access and it fucking shits me
I've looked online for over about 8 guides and none of them seem to permanently fix it

If I got win 10, would I have to format or anything stupid like that?
don't want to lose my games

You'd probably have to dual boot it in that case. Usually the retail release won't upgrade a preview version so you'd have to wipe it anyway.

As for WiFi, I had similar trouble but setting a static IP in Windows fixed it. For some reason this machine doesn't like DHCP. I even tried a different WiFi card.

I don't understand how moving from DX10 -> 11 -> 12 is such a huge difference like that.

I just don't understand what DX really "does" I guess

Realistically speaking, what are we gaining by moving to newer DXs?

At the moment DX12 isn't going to make such a huge impact since we're still at the stage where we're just getting comfortable with 11 and honestly, not a lot of stuff support DX12, specifically gaming.

One of the best things I see about DX12 is the ability to use all the video ram when you run multiple cards . Example: if you have 2 2gb cards it will use all 4 instead of the present 2 that's on the first card . Of course it will take new video drivers but nvidia is already on board with it . Things are looking up for PC gamers . Also if you are using the preview you will have to backup and do a clean install of 10 . It won't upgrade .

Potentially more efficent usage of the card and new supported technologies for better looking eye candy I think

They've also lowered the abstraction level so devs can do even more hardware specific hardware optimizations.

Would it be possible to get windows 10, install it without a format??

When I installed windows 7 64 bit it backed up all my stuff

When it officially releases at the end of July, yes. I don't believe the preview editions really offer any sort of upgrade in place functionality.
