Are they considered the lowest common denominators of real entertainment?

What like American animated comedies? To be honest I'd say I like those just as much as I like anime, stuff like Family Guy, The Simpsons, American Dad, Bob's Burgers and my favorite is King of the Hill.

The lowest common denominator of entertainment is whatever they make for what people want to see, so that there is a huge majority of anime genres that are the same (moe), or movies like Transformers where it's blowing up cars and boobies.

Well, animation might be by some people who don't realise animation can be for adults. A lot of people are ignorant and misinformed and think if it's animated, that makes it a kids show.

As for the comedy, I've never heard of or met anyone who thinks comedy is the lowest form of entertainment. I think comedy is one of the best forms of entertainment. The world can be a depressing place and comedy cheers us up and keeps us laughing.

Years ago I'd agree with the treatment anime was given but due to Disney's releases of the Studio Ghibli titles anime's fanbase has grown steadily over the last few years. As for comedy, there are actually numerous types of comedy; Seth Rogen style drug comedy, low class comedy which includes bathroom humor, romantic comedy, family comedy, road trip comedy, etc. There will always be types that are looked down on and types that will get nominated for awards. Mel Brooks and Woody Allen comedies tend to be the most accepted in hollywood at award time along with any Sandra Bullock starring rom-com.

No, I mean animation and comedy, in general. Not just anime or reality TV shows, but any form of entertainment with comedy or animation.

Well, animation seems like the only place "physical" humor still exists outside of shitty Wipeout clones. Slapstick tends to get a chuckle out of anybody so yeah I would say it's the bottom of the barrel but they can be smart at the same time. Futurama is funny on so many levels.

i can understand comedy being especially important. Seeing that any one episode that ends in a satisfactory manner makes it possible for more (to come).
