So I figured, that generally visual novels are often discussed in anime that are adapted from theM, and I figured it'd be nice to have a dedicated thread to them. So any favorite visual novels? What do you think this medium offers that no other medium can? Opinions on anime adaptations? Any visual novels you are looking forward to ? Any translations you wish were here already?

He went and did it.

Currently slowing rolling through seacats with Fate/hollow ataraxia as an alternative. Sengoku Rance is up next on the list.

Man, I never personally read Rance, but it sounds like one of those "its so bad its good" kind of thing.

I'm a sucker for almost anything that Visual Arts/Key does: Planetarian, Kanon, Clannad, Little Busters, Rewrite. Can't wait for the Angel Beats VN to get an English translation, and I would love to see a Rewrite anime.

Steins; Gate is the best of the rest, in my opinion. Brilliant anime--and the VN was even better.

The Grisaia trilogy was quite good. So was Devil on a G String (also the best titled VN ever). Would really love for that one to get an anime--it could be awesome.

As for what makes a good VN, I think there are two things:

1) VNs facilitate telling the same story from different perspectives. Rewrite does a tremendous job of this; depending on the player's decisions, you can meet and get to know people on opposing sides of a conflict--as well as those just caught in the middle. It drives home that one man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist. Many less extreme examples allow you the opportunity to get to know the motivations of characters that would otherwise be opaque; when playing the true end of a game, you know why some side character makes what might otherwise look like an odd decision, because you've done get route and seen how the world looks from her point of view.

2) Good VNs allow the player to really examine how choices can have meaningful consequences. Steins; Gate is great in this respect. The phone call not taken can literally change the world.

Totototo, Full Metal Muramasa, Subahibi, and like hundreds of amazing Kamige games (literally called god games for being so good) are japanese only.

I tried learning moon runes but it was too much for me I don't have the time.

Yeah I read the first one through the fan translation, but since the fan translator got hired by Sekai, I can't wait to see his take on the other two games.

Also there are some kind of things only possible through the VN medium. One infamous example is ToToTo, now I won't spoil it for you, but read the summary. It blows you away what you can do with the medium.

Ever 17 is another one where it uses the medium to tell a unique story with a unique plot twist that can only be told through the medium.

I love pretty much anything by Key, so I am looking forward to their Angel Beats VN that may or may not be translated one day.

I am pretty picky when it comes to VNs, so I actually have a ton of trouble finding the right ones. I won't read anything less than 50 hours long and not top-tier. Now that I finished the Muv-Luv series, I'm not sure what VN to read next.

Besides the Key novels, I've read five that were (or come close) to being that long. Apologies if you've already read them.:

Fruit of Grisaia: Excellent all-around.
Devil on a G String: Great story, especially True End; MC is kind of a jerk, but he grew on me. I'm assuming you've read this, however, based on your pic.
YU-NO: A bit dated in terms of graphics and game mechanics; there is a lot of very clever storytelling here... if you don't mind the incest (and there is a lot of that).
Katawa Shoujo: Don't remember whether I hit 50 hours played here or not. A solid, if unspectacular, romance VN
Steins; Gate: Best non-Key VN I've read

Playing the official release now, since Steam released it yesterday (or, rather, very early this morning). Feel quite happy to have Kickstarted this. Excellent VN, very high production values.

Awesome , though I am waiting for the 18 plus version since in the steam version they censor Amane's backstory
