the female commoners' kimonos are so pretty. the male ones are ugly.

i wonder what the male noblemen's kimonos are like... they're probably pretty too.

My Japanese landlady said there wasn't much difference between upper crust and lower crust kimonos. The difference was in the the under garments. So when you paid someone like the basket peddler he would get a peek of some fancy silk showing from the sleeve. He would then know he was dealing with someone with wealth. BTW she came from a samurai family so when she turned 16 she was given a dagger. Only two options if your family lost, here's your knife so you can do the right thing.

How many swords does one guy need?

In samurais' case, more than one:
The longsword was the "business" sword, and therefore sacred--A samurai was honor-bound not to put it back in its scabbard until it had "tasted blood" and had to apologize to it personally if he hadn't.
(Which explains why they always flash their sword halfway out of the scabbard when threatening an enemy in movies and anime, and the running Lupin III gag of Goemon saying "Once again I have cut a worthless object" every time he slices something in half.)
It was as spiritually sacred as the Jedi's lightsaber, but unlike the Prequel Trilogy, they didn't go around using it for everything.

So, in addition to the symbolic icon of their profession, it also became necessary to carry a "regular" short sword or dagger for all those daily household uses.

Beautiful. Thanks for adding something that's not the usual attempt at controversy.
