America is lazy. Yes, we need to create extra jobs like waiters for people to work. You have to start off the bottom and work up to your career. But what I said before, America is lazy. I think in some restaurants, not the fancy expensive ones, needs to let people do their own work. Go up there and order, wait at your table with your number, get your food unless you order for buffet, get your own drinks from the soda fountain and enjoy your meal. At the end the janitor people cleans the tables for the next people. Seemly wherever you go there's always janitors anyways. It's only a thought. Maybe someone can improve the system better. Hopefully. I feel for the female waiters though. I know the guys in my family gets drunk at the bar and goes somewhere to eat. They have to catcall and flirt with the waiters. If the waiter is a guy, they have to be aholes. I feel for those people. So, they better be glad that their not kin to them like me. :/ There's always a solution for problems, you just have to sit and think about it for a bit.

This.

Although, I'm sure most people would think I'm crazy for suggesting they don't be lazy bums.

I think they just need to amend the Fair Labor Standards Act and remove the exception for tipped employees ($2.13 per hour is minimum wage for tipped employees and the employer has cover any short fall). Technically restaurants don't have to pay wait staff also long as they earn enough tips to be at least minimum wage, at least according to Federal Law. I am sure states have their own regulation.

But you are already paying for the food and the service only cause the waiter believes he deserves more of my money for doing nothing more than what he is paid to do is not a good enough reason for me to part with more money.

You are paying for the food only, if you go to a restaurant where you are served very well, you are expected to give tips, it's common courtesy. If you go to a fast food place like McDonalds, you are not expected to give tips because the service is not important, you just pay for your food and go.

You two have never worked in restaurants, people from that industry are paid $2 per hour or $35 per day (8 hour shift or more) how is that going to make a living? waiters/waitresses live off the tips. Unlike fast food places where the workers get paid minimum wage ($8.25) since they don't expect to receive tips. They also have to do a lot, not only serve your damn food and provide all your needs while you're there.

I have a good job right now thanks to my career but I used to work in fast food places and restaurants during high school so I know how hard this industry is. It is the worst job ever because some customers are assholes, they expect to be treated like Kings and Queens but behave like 5 year old brats. In my case, I treated customers they way they treated me (" the customer is always right" my ass) that's why I got fired a couple of times anyway, if you don't like to give tips, don't expect a good service, assholes.

Everything in Australia is so god damn expensive, I'm glad it isn't custom to tip every waiter. That said, a good waiter will get tipped occasionally, especially at higher end restaurants. Waiters also get much better pay here in Australia, so it's not a bad thing that we don't tip.

Seems like America is having a hard time. I never ever tipped someone and I have never seen someone else tip someone. Tipping is almost unheard in my country.

Yeah, we don't tip in my country either because waiters actually get paid well. =_=

I'm a part time bartender, so I've got some skin in this game. I work at a smaller, neighborhood bar. We get the regular patrons and a few people who just wander in sometimes, so I've got a pretty good idea of what I'll get when I work.

<begin rant>
Why tip? Several reasons. One, I like to eat, too. I enjoy electricity and running water, and my cloths aren't free. I listen to you when you're sober, and later when you're drunk. I carefully craft each mixed drink you order to the way you like it, right down to the pickled mushrooms and extra Brussels sprouts you ask for. I keep the bar clean when you spill your drink, and sweep up the glass when you drop your beer bottle. I keep everything from ice to bottled beer stocked for you and your friends so you can drink all night long. I keep the lights on, turn up your music (that I can't stand) when you ask, and make you pizzas. I make popcorn and set out peanuts, which you crush onto the floor, making the biggest mess known to mankind, because my boss won't let me just put a couple of salt licks on the bar. I break up your fights, and *shudder* clean the restrooms at the end of the night.

I do all of this for $7/hr, which isn't bad for a bar salary in my area. While some people are very good tippers, some people just expect service for free. Let me ask you something - whatever job you're in, you like getting paid, yes? So. do. we.
</end rant>

In all seriousness, I honestly feel for the people who have to make a living doing this, especially in small places like mine. If I didn't have a good other job, I wouldn't be able to make ends meet. So next time you go out, keep in mind the service staff who take care of you.

Ok until they change the system tipping isn't a courtesy it's what you should be doing. Chances are not only does your server have to take care of themselves but they are also helping cover the wages of the bartender and busboy. Like at my old job I had to tip out based on my sales percentage so if a table stiffs me I end up having to pay to serve them. Thankfully now I work in a private country club when I make a decent hourly salary and get a guaranteed 18 percent of everything I sell. Also once you stiff at a restaurant every server is gonna know that you're a stiffer and next time you come in be prepared to see your drinks go bone dry. I'm not saying I've never left a bad tip, but I feel myself obligated to leave less than 15 % I'm gonna let management know about it because it means my service was horrible.

Here in the US, hospitality workers live off tips. They get no tips they have minimum wage to live off of.

Yeah....if you ever work as a waiter, you'll start tipping better. Some of the best tips I receive are from others in the food service industry. They make dealing with some of the most horrible people easier. Also, living. Makes living easier. Y'know....actually making money.

Just as an aside, I understand that if your food is bad that you'll probably be upset, but you shouldn't get angry at the waiter personally. We don't make your food. We literally are just carrying it from the kitchen to the table.

Though lets be real. Some waiters do in fact bring home up to $30/hr with the inclusion of tips. Meanwhile the chefs in the very same facility still barely scrape by at a set wage of $10-13/hr.

It's far more lucrative to bring food to people than to make it for people.
