No. Not at launch.

I will buy any 'indispensable' games for that platform(like PS3 previously(have), and PS4 currently(don't have)), in my case the 'indispensable' part would include any noteworthy jrpgs.

If no 'indispensable' games appear for a platform(like xbox360), I will never get that console either. So if they want me to buy a console, they need at least one good enough game for my tastes released on it during its life-time.

Then at some point I will get the console (for example, I've had PS3 for less than two years...). I do have a job so it wouldn't be an insurmountable expense.

^ I may not get the chance to play the games from day one, but I really don't care about that aspect.
On the other hand, once I do get the console I will at least have some interesting games to play. And hopefully most bugs ironed out, of both the games and console. ...This has been true for me since PS1 era.

Does this approach seem strange to you?

Never bought a console at launch, never will. I always wait a year or so for the library to build up. Once there's a lot of Japanese games, I'll go for it.

I buy games, not consoles so my answer is: absolutely not.

Anyone who buys a console at launch even though it doesn't really have games that appeal to them because ''hey, it just came out and EVENTUALLY there will be great games on it!'' is a tool.

I suppose if someone wants to be a guinea pig then sure, buy it. I'd rather wait a year while the bugs and shit get worked out. Not too mention devs/companies having more time to adjust to the system.

Pretty sure every console I own was purchased at launch, but that's because they've all launched with a game or two that I really wanted to play. I've definitely endured my share of launch pains that most consoles go through, but for the most part things have been good.

Nope. Never purchased a console at launch.
Prefer to wait a couple of months or a year for the price to come down and the problems / improvements to be out by then.

It's not advisable to, for one first gen lineup of games often aren't great with a few exceptions, ane two, the console itself usually decreases in price considerably after about a couple of years or a year, by then, better games and more will be out..

I bought a PS4 at launch and don't think I'll ever do it again. It basically sat there for a year with no good games to play, and the PS3 still gets more use. You'd probably have to go back to the PS2 and original Xbox to find a console where they had launch titles I was excited about. Hey, another overhyped first-person shooter that everyone'll be done playing in 6 months? No thanks.

Not to mention, with the last couple console generations, the PS or Xbox released on launch day is replaced by a far better one a year later, and if you bought the old one, it's out of hard drive space or suffering from some engineering problem they didn't catch until the devices started failing out in the field. No thanks to all of that too.

The one exception is Nintendo consoles. The machine you get on Day One tends to be good enough, and they have at least a handful of entertaining games.

I tend to wait a few years before buying it mainly because I hate the really expensiveness of a new system that may or may not have any good games.

I wouldn't buy a console on its launch date.
I usually wait for the 2nd generation version to come out that actually works and is cheaper.
(Like the first version of the 360 had about a 30% fail rate due to the red ring of death, and the first version of the ps3 suffered from a similar problem, but nowhere near as often)

Last console I purchased at launch was my Xbox 360. Waited outside of Walmart until midnight to get it. Mine lasted a long time though before finally getting a red-ring of death. Probably 4 years before I had to replace it. All my other consoles I didn't end up buying till at least a year after they launched (PS3, Wii, PS4, but still no Xbox One though or WiiU).

I was going to buy the dreamcast on launch but the Australian launch was an absolute disaster!!!!
There were only like 2 games available(sonic not included) and the only accessories were third party....
I did buy it two weeks later though.

I bought the first xbox on launch. Got it with Halo and DOA3. That was epic. And the people who bought it on launch later got sent a free controller and i think a new power cable, maybe a game also if i recall?

I dont think i will ever again though. More so because i dont have heaps of $ like i used to and also iam not sure that i will even ever buy a console again?
