First off, this thread isn't about the bloody string!

I just find it Ironic that Hestia (I think in roman pantheon she was Vesta) is a loli in the anime "Is it wrong to try to pick up girls in a dungeon?" I mean, isn't she the oldest of the greek gods? I believe that any greek deity older than her was a Titan... And yet she's a loli..... oh, and she didn't have such large breasts in any depictions of her either.

You are thinking of Vesta. A Vespa is a scooter (popularized in FLCL).

Hestia is a sister to Zeus, and is thus not the oldest of the Greek gods.

However, what is ironic about Hestia is that she received a sexualized portrayal despite being one of the three virgin goddesses, alongside Athena and Artemis.

She's the eldest sister though, look up the story of zeus "Killing" Chronos, she's the last to come out because she was the first one Chronos ate, wasn't Zeus the youngest from that tale?

EDIT: this wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hestia#Genealogy_of_the_Olympians_in_Greek_mythology says Zeus was the youngest, and the only one Chronos didn't eat.

RE-EDIT: "Immediately after their birth, Cronus swallowed all but the last and youngest, Zeus, who forced Cronus to disgorge his siblings and led them in a war against their father and the other Titans.[10] As "first to be devoured . . . and the last to be yielded up again", Hestia was thus both the eldest and youngest daughter" So we're both right I guess?

More Irony there from the show "Maria, the Virgin Witch" who had a Succubus Familiar named Artemis

The Olympian gods are by far not anywhere near the oldest Greek gods. And no, not everything before them was a Titan.

I actually think this is a pretty neat portrayal of her. Nothing really goes against the original characterization. Hestia is the goddess of the hearth and home and the family. So it's very appropriate that Hestia is our introduction to the Familia system in the story and the home that she and Bell share is prominent.

My thinking is that in this setting the gods are really defined and fulfilled by their interaction with mortals, and especially with their Familia. In that sense Hestia is a young goddess because she's only just started her tiny familia.

I agree with you, I'm just pointing out the irony of her actual physical looks. I like that she is represented like that

Just remember that it is a TV show. If I got mad at how history/mythology was misrepresented by TV I'd be angry 24/7/365.25. For what it is worth I'd say just sit back and enjoy the show. Dungeon is not, I hope, meant to be a super serious show. It is my fervent hope they keep the humour in it.

That has a lot to do with the Japanese writers having a much looser grip on classical mythology than we do (which is hardly unexpected).

Hestia's portrayal I feel matches her portfolio pretty well.

PS: Yes, she was the firstborn child of Chronus and Rhea.

Doesn't strike me as frightfully ironic. It would have been ironic had she maybe been the goddess of mature flatchested women or something. Her role was basically domestic life and architecture. And while we're not exactly seeing a lot of architecture. It could be argued she's doing her best with the domestic bits with bell :P

For it to be ironic she'd have to give out terrible advice.. Or be an awful architect.

Her being a rather busy loli. Not so much. Though there's plenty of other things that could be called

It's not really architecture :p

Importantly though she always keeps the home fires burning.

She's not a loli, anyways.
