I wanted to open a discussion on about why japanese people depict themselves with euopean attributes in anime. This seems to be the most popular form of media throughout asia and it propagates self-image issues from early ages. I am interested in all aspects of this topic. Watchoo think?

They dont, you just perceive them as that since your more familiar with white people.

I'm 100% sure most Japanese people consider anime characters to look japanese. They are drawings on a piece of paper / computer, they are open to interpretation.

Hence why the "white" characters always have blonde hair and blue eyes and speak in a stupid accent.

I dont know what the hell your talking about with self image issues, stop projecting your personal issues on an entire country of people.

No one in japan has self image issues because of an anime character, if they did it wouldn't sell quite as much as it does now.

Meh alot of it is due to the fact that alot of anime design traits were taken from early Disney shorts. Dont know if I smart enough to extrapolate anything from that though.

I'm white and im pretty sure that's not what I look like either, so whats your point? They are drawn like that to accentuate the more attractive features on a human body.

People perceive appearances based on what their surroundings are and some people perceive them as nothing.

In my opinion they state of what could be a common person from all arraund themselves, most MC have black hair, black eyes mid tan skin compared to girl or foreign people for them.

The concentration of the eyes and the forehead can not be duplicated into an anime, in which translate as a sole rotoscoping technique, which usually lead to bad acceptance among the people.

Now anime character tend to be more or less perfect in contrary to the real life person , leading a free way to interpret from where the charter is, example in Latin America people could easily localize anime character just by changing their names only.

If you look at the girls in Infinite Stratos, the foreign ones (outside of Japan) literally have the same designs as the Asian ones, just with different hair styles.

This girl is German

This girl is English

This girl is French

This girl is Chinese (LOL)

And this girl is Japanese

See what I mean?

You do know that colored hair is an identifier. It helps the characters stand out for easy pick up. Never even considered any of them as white. Though you can easily tell when a character is " western" due to the bad accents. I mean there arent very many purple haired white people either. Are you Japanese from Japan or born in America.? if it's the latter then that can color your perception. Everyhting in anime is done for effect. The eye shape, the way evil people mess with their glasses, and yes hair color are all there to help with everything from marketing to telling people apart quickly. There are tons of shows where there are no rainbow haired people.

I agree with you that they are drawn very white but I would like to ask how do you think that Asian people should look in anime? I honestly dont think I remember alot of anime characters that look traditionally Asian except maybe from something with rotoscoping so im curious how you would think they should look.

I think it's either bull or people are overthinking about it.

Large eyes and pale skin? That's pretty much anime style and these two attributes are generally attractive in most societies in the world. It's not as though only white people have pale skin (and potentially large eyes). Pale skin is traditionally seen as the sign of beauty since those who toil outdoors have dark skin. Just because white people have white skin doesn't necessarily mean that pale characters are meant to be western. That's not how it works.

Blonde hair? Hair that isn't black or dark brown is seen as exotic and different in the Asian countries, Japan included. Nobody talks about the presence of purple, white, green, red hair in anime. Or bald characters. People focus on the blonde characters for this argument and also ignore the black and brown haired characters.

^Same goes for eye color. People fixate on blue and ignore the red, black, green, purple, gold, etc. eyed characters.

What traits, exactly? Most animes don't even have western characters, and those that do tend to have them as a minority of the characters present. Animation styles are not usually examined since the characters tend to default as Japanese regardless of the style.

I do know that some Asian people do have a thing for western culture, but the same can be said about people in the west for a thing for Asian culture. It cuts both ways fairly evenly, from my experiences. It's just that there are way more Asians in the world than whites.

Themes? People ignore the traditional Japanese stuff and school life stuff to focus on things with knights in it. I don't think those are disproportionate in number.

I fail to see how this is actually a thing.

Pretty sure Japanese people like white skin and try to look so. At least that's how it was for the 2 weeks I spent in Japan. Nothing surprising about it being reflected in anime.
