Mardi Gras (French for "Fat Tuesday") is the day before Ash Wednesday, and is also called "Shrove Tuesday" or "Pancake Day". Mardi Gras is the final day of Carnival, though the term is often used incorrectly to describe the days and weeks preceding Fat Tuesday.[1] Carnival begins 12 days after Christmas, or Twelfth Night, on January 6 and ends on Mardi Gras, which always falls the day before Ash Wednesdsay. Perhaps the cities most famous for their Mardi Gras celebrations include New Orleans, Louisiana; Venice, Italy; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Many other places have important Mardi Gras celebrations as well. Carnival is an important celebration in most of Europe, except in the United Kingdom where pancakes are the tradition, and also in many parts of Latin America and the Caribbean.

I don't get how people know which Tuesday is Mardi Gras because it seems like some people just declare it Mardi Gras and suddently everyone at school breaks out these shiny beads and I think last year it was later in Februrary... or maybe I'm just really oblivious to it, haha

My mother and 3 of her girlfriends just got back from Mardi Gras. It's so sad that my 55 year old mother has more of a life than I do. I've never been to mardi gras either.

Fat tuesday? Heh, I nearly forgot. But I don't care about fat tuesday. While it is the last day before the begining of the season of lent,it just seems meaningless to me. Just another exuse to party. But in the words of my boss "we all need an exuse to party." I also see no reason for the average joe the celabrate the day before ash wensday. It's not like he's gonna spend the season of lent fasting, as is traditional within the Catholic church. I prefer to call it Mardi Gras, "Fat tuesday" sounds nasty.

I'm from England too! I ate so many damn pancakes today... seriously. But I have been to a mardi gras festival before as well. They can be quite fun. I love pancakes. Our pancakes are meant to be slightly thicker than the crepe. Pretty much everyone in europe has been eating pancakes that way for years, and France isn't the only country with catholic traditions. I am willing to admit that France eat the most pancakes however. Just look anywhere in France and you'll find a creperie or a place that sells crepes. lol

I too live to far away to be affected. Also, I'm in college so even if I wasn't, I doubt I would get the day off for it, which, I didn't. All the information you listed was pretty interesting - I didn't know most of that.
