A General Question to CR, and thoughts from other CR members.

As a person who has limited space for DVD/BR, I now buy all my Movies/TV Shows from iTunes and store them on my NAS, After collecting around 2000+ DVD/BR Movies/TV and Anime, i got to a point 3 years ago where i just ran out of space to store my DVD/BR collection.

Could CR in the future offer to Sell Digital Copy's of the Anime they stream. (with Consent from the Owners of the Anime Rights holders)

While you can come back to CR and re-watch a good anime, there are times when CR has to remove anime for what ever reason brings that day about.

I was thinking about this with CR removing Anohana this week, It's an anime that slipped past me, I was able to watch it over the weekend before it was removed, I thought, I liked that show a lot, I would buy it if it was available in Digital Form.

Would other CR members do the same with other Anime.?

I've always been thinking that CR should have a service that aids in watching anime offline, because there's isn't internet everywhere around the world.

Thing about digital copies is that they really don't have to worry about them being pirated because it's already so easy to obtain a digital copy via non-licensed routes. Frankly, the only practical way to obtain a digital copy right now is to go the non-licensed route.

Like the entire series? That'd could be cool. But then there'd be people who'd distribute it illegally on other sites.

Yeah but it's not ripped from CR. It's impossible to do that.

other members have said Crunchyroll only has the right to stream them and nothing else. but it would be cool to buy episodes and only stream them on Crunchyroll. i guess thats the way it would go. in doing that i think it would make Crunchyroll go out and get better anime

I hope not. The DVD industry is struggling enough as it is.

Getting the rights to distribute content the normal way is like herding cats, I don't see much hope for CR getting the dough necessary to pull that off for the massive amounts of different licenses this would entail.

Even if they did, I wouldn't really be interested in it. I like having DVDs. Even if I rarely watch them because it's more convenient just to watch my fansubs, CR, or even dig out the DVDR I burned my fansubs to (usually 50-80% of a series will fit on disc that way=less disc swapping).

(Geeze, I really ought to buy a bluray player some day. It's not like I can't afford it...)

If CR tried, im sure they could obtain a home release license instead of just a streaming license, but that comes with a heavy cost and restrictions. Anything simulcasted can not be obtained for home use until the license holder say so, usually when/after all the volumes of a hard copy is released in japan. Crunchyroll works with Sentai and Ponycanyon US, Aniplex US and other american licencors to bring streaming content, but those companies are the ones that hold the power for home distrobution, CR just works with them to provide web streaming.

All in all, it would be nice for CR to offer downloads but its highly unlikely due to CR's deep roots in streaming and their US/Japan partnerships and conglomerates.

There's already a group out there that specifically rips from Funi/CR

It would be good to have some sort of platform (like steam) but specifically for anime, then you can just buy it all in one place, but for that to happen the whole licensing and region restricts would have to be removed completely.

That would not work. CR owns the rights for online streaming of anime, not download so therefore if they wanted to provide a download service then it would require CR to first of all pick up the distribution rights for the anime in question for every region they want to make it an download. And that would cost much more then just licensing the streaming rights for an anime, so the question is does CR have the money to do that?

Then CR would probably have to develop a new media format to limit piracy and I don't think CR have the man power or money to do that..

The only way is if CR runs a sytem such as Steam/Origin to run as a DRM and require an internet connection. It wouldn't remove the online restriction however it would remove the need for streaming. Not sure how viable this would be and I have absolutely zero clue on the legality issues, but with the DRM in place it would be a possibility.

And yes, I am aware someone somewhere will crack teh DRM and distribute illegally, plus the illegal copies won't disappear.

Super Edit: I do wish they'd offer BR only releases of anime series instead of DVD/BR combos. I understand not having a bluray player and how nice those can be, but now that I have one the extra discs are just a waste.

Yeah, I thought of that too. They've removed so many good anime, that it kinda infuriates me. I know they're old, but still..
