steam now does refunds for your steam games, only if:
bought from steam,
less than 6 months old
less than 2 hours playtime
not a bundle
not from retail

so if you meet those requirements and own a copy of a game you aren't fond of on steam, you can probably get your money back and buy something better.

I'm sure all the idiots who buy games without checking to see if their PC can even run it will rejoice over this.

I'm glad that the option exists as there are certainly cases where it would help like if you bought a game that legitimately did not work on your otherwise spec matching machine for some unpredictable reason or if the game was a buggy mess. Goodness knows that sort of thing definitely happens with PC releases. But, at the same time, I think the vast majority of refunds are really just the fault of the purchaser anyway and are really unnecessary. If you do your research before you buy a game and don't fall into the pre-order trap unless you are 100% certain of what you're going to get (which should almost never be the case these days) you're probably not going to be making enough bad choices to warrant needing a refund system. This is even more the case on PC given that game price drops are so frequent and come so early after release. There's already no hardware where you have more incentive to do research and wait until later to buy something than on PC.

I'm also concerned about how this will impact user reviews and smaller/shorter titles. How is this going to impact games that you are largely intended to experience in under 2 hours? Are those games basically going to be free now? That really sucks for the developers. And will we see someone buying a game, letting it run for a couple of hours then throwing up a negative review before claiming a refund just so they can shit on the game? Should reviews from returned games be left visible in the system? Sure the stuff in the negative review may accurately depict why they returned the game in the first place but it also feels ripe for abuse.

Thinking back to when I bought a game for my brother's birthday where the first transaction failed due to Steam timing out, and then later getting charged for it anyways reminds me of how terrible getting a refund was. Being treated like it was my fault, and then being explicitly told that I would never get an opportunity for a refund ever again highlighted the rest of my experience with Valve's "customer service".

It's great that they're finally realizing that customers have legitimate reasons to want to a return a game, but good grief they were late to this revelation. I'm not going to applaud them for this change because it should be a given.

I opened a Steam account yesterday and downloaded "DOA5-Last Round". It works fine for me, but then again, I have a laptop that's built for gaming. And now for the subject of short games on Steam, maybe they can have a rental policy that lets you have the game for several days for a price like $3.99 instead of paying 10-15 bucks for a VN or some other short playtime game.

I'm surprised of the feature, glad to have it. I bought Hatred, only because of the hype how brutal and gory it is. Played it one and half an hour and decided to refund it. Very stupid civilian AI, gets repeating very fast and it even wasn't that gory... Alright to play but I rather get my 16.66€ back.

For refund reason I chose not fulfilling expectations, and like 1 hour later I got email the game is removed from my account and I get the refund in one week. Weird the refund takes that long but at least the reply was fast.
