They also spoke, Spanish, German, French, Dutch, Swedish, Portuguese, Italian, and so on. Those are all European languages. Really, you should go take some history courses instead of spouting off stuff that you know nothing about.

Their primary/native language was in most cases, English.

I think people are missing the point here. The topic isn't saying English should be the only language, but the "official" language. Which is only logical here in the US. If I can take the time to become fluent in Spanish and Japanese (along with my native English language), other people can take the time to learn English should they choose to live here. It's common sense people.

Yes it should. Why should our government have to spend billions of dollars on translating documents and hiring teachers to speak different languages to teach kids in school? ,

Both sets of my grandparents migrated to the USA LEGALLY from Europe. They stayed at Ellis Island, learned English, got jobs and then raised families. Why do we pay trespassing immigrants (non-citizens) with food stamps, welfare, education, healthcare, housing, etc. with tax payer money? Why must the middleclass struggle to pay their own bills while the government takes 40 cents on every dollar that they earn to pay for people who came here against the law? People who can't be bothered to fit in to society let alone learn English. we are paying to raise foreign children and their parents as we leave our children 20 TRILLION Dollars in debt? It's insane.

Most of what you're saying is simply untrue. You are watching faux news, listening to AM radio and believing the lies that you are told. It's really sad how ignorant you are. I feel sorry for you.

Prove it. Who is paying for the 30k a month worth of people 'sneaking' over the border every month? I realize that you liberals need SOMEONE to vote for them, but Importing foreigners to vote is treason.

Wait.... English isn't the official language of the USA? Well that's odd.

Although to be fair, in that accent it's hardly real English. I put subtitles on american films because otherwise I can't understand

Yeah it's weird. The US's founding fathers came from the UK so the language should be very similar in both writing and speaking. I don't know who gone and screwed that up. The US is so weird, American English? US Measuring System? Grading Names (Freshman, Sophomore), Driving on the right? Who the hell thought of this stuff? I think the metric system is better, grades should go by numbers, English should be spoken and written the same throughout the world... not sure about driving, is driving on the left more common?

If you drive a 18 wheeler by law your required to know how to read and write in English. If you didn't know the language you wouldn't get hired but if you were willing to learn then the company I worked would bring in a teacher for groups of 10+ anything under I would be the one teaching.

It's the law, and if you get pulled over and don't speak English well enough, they'll seize your CDL on the spot.

Yeah I never heard of us paying illegals... We need to deport the illegals instead of reward them. Come in legally all you want but you gotta learn English and our history like those of our legal immigrants.

Exactly. I like these people saying no to move to another country with another language. They would be forced to learn that language or they wouldn't be able to make it in that country. It's only respectful to the natives which in the US's case is Caucasian Americans since they make up 77.7% while American Indians and Alaska Natives make up 1.2% and Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders make up 0.2%.

I don't think so many "settlers" and immigrants who came over were not English speakers but from other European nations like the French, the Spanish and the Portuguese and on top of that before this continent was "settled" there were Indians of many languages.

Should English become the U.S.A.'s National Official Language?
This idea is so awful, I can barely even consider that a valid sentence.
The country isn't bigoted enough already? Now we should pass laws making bigotry mandatory?
Should we pass a law making male the national official gender?

No I don't think it should. I am first generation american whose family is from England, but america wasn't built on the backs of Americans! How could we be so self centered to think that English is the only language. I grew up in city where Korean was spoken more than English was and I am more than comfortable with that. Some towns its Italian, others Spanish, and so on. America was built on the backs of many who came here for a better life. To pick one language over all and says its better than the rest is a joke when most people who thump their chests claiming " 'Merica." cant even use the language properly.
