Somehow I have a question: do I need to play either the game or watch some old anime before this? Seems interesting but I usually avoid sequals to something because I can easily get lost in it.

Kuon is Hakuoro daughter, of course it is after the original series.

The weird part is she's apparently Hakuoro and Yuzuha's daughter, not Eruru's. Guess he went for the harem ending when he came back. -.-

Though she seems more Aruru than anything else.

I've been wondering but can't find it. Do you know what the slime or technically past human was going to say? the Umakeko...?

Also, since the title says false mask. I'm thinking that someone is pretending to be Hakuoro, a damn imposter! Hope the harem didn't fall for that falsity! Or the mask is something that signifies the ruler in his country. But well the main thing is I hope the Drama tag this anime has is not about the past harem thinking Hakuoro already woke up as someone else, and our main guy is the real Hakuoro just doesn't know it, yet. All speculation, but maybe the reason he doesn't have a mask anymore is because he's whole now?

May this please end on a happy note please?

Yeah, hence its weird it followed the game continuity over the first series continuity.

You're half right. >.>

He isn't Hakuoro though. If you recall the storyline of the first show/game then our new protagonist's hospital gown and lack of strength should be a hint. IE he's an actual human. In the original story the animal ear people were genetic experiments that repopulated the Earth after humanity died off. They're physically superior to pitiful humans. -.-

That's true they don't show the baby with Oboro in the anime. Is that because it was for all ages? And would that mean the games and anime will become progressively different through the trilogy? Because you'd think a daughter of Hakuoro would be a big thing right? So maybe in the anime thy just didn't show these parts but assumed things went as the game did? Or this anime is the sequal for the game not anime?

This seems to be a sequel to the game continuity not the anime's. Unless they're going to make some drastic changes to game lore and have Kuon be Eruru's daughter. But that's pretty doubtful. The original anime had no sexual / romantic connotations going on with anyone beyond Eruru x Hakuoro so yeah it was based on the all ages version ( it wouldn't get made as an anime otherwise ;p ).

We'll see if it just plows on ahead with the game continuity or if it somehow tries to retcon the original series ( I hope not as that would be rather weird trying to retcon in Hakuoro and Yuzuha randomly getting it on at some point ).

But Hakuoro WAS a human in the first game/anime, but became more because he equipped that mask in the past. Even if this guy isn't Hakuoro, I still hope he returns eventually. Though since that other masked guy has a different name, he isn't our Hakuoro. Just saying there is a chance that this guy is Hakuoro, not 100% but hope he appears maybe in next game, not as the bad guy though please.

Yes, he was human at one point hundreds of years ago but became the vessel of a god and got some upgrades. He didn't equip the mask he was dying and the god in question offered to save him in exchange for becoming his vessel. Which is marked by the mask. Then got frozen. Then thawed out and experimented on in an effort to save humanity. Failed miserably. Rocks fall, everybody dies, animal people inherit the Earth. >.>

Hakuoro is still sleeping/sealed right now with the winged blonde priestess from the first show watching over his "grave". So that the Destruction side of him doesn't go all apeshit again.

So far it seems like this: Watching the original and/or playing the game(s) isn't a bad idea, but might not be necessary for this series.

Honestly I'd recommend checking it all out because it's all good stuff, but that's in addition to this series, not as a prerequisite for it.

Just wishing Hakuoro wakes up some time, rather in this arc or the next. He might even just send out a fraction of himself. But a their still waiting for him he'd better pick up the pace!.
On a side note, in the past Hakuoro did end up destroying one of the research facilities, but there are probably more than just one in the world right? So maybe the other satellite facilities kept working on that mask tech and will appear in this series as the bad guys trying to re-take the overworld?

Well that was an awesome opening episode. The music is fantastic so far, I really hope maintains its high quality throughout. The two main character's both have pretty good chemistry and the comedy scenes made me laugh quite a bit. Will definitely stick with this show.

A part of me is kinda thinking that Haku may be some sort of clone of Hakuoro from when they were experimenting on him back before he destroyed the research facility. Since they were definitely trying a bit of everything to prolong the human race using him as a sample and then that one slime at the beginning of the episode stopped and looked at him calling him "Umakeko".

Do you know what Umakeko is supposed to be?

I've been trying not to be too spoilery here. But if you really insist:
