What do you think are the reasons for a parent/parents to abuse their child (excluding alcohol)?

Why would parents hit their child for silly reasons like in this case: The father wants the kid (let's say it's 7 years old) to turn on the TV, and the kid doesn't do it. Because of that, he slaps the kid (this leaves only a temporary effect, which is pain). The father could have turned the TV on by himself and/or have told the kid that doing something like that is impolite and wrong. Why resort to violence?

Edit: It might have been a better idea to name the thread "Parents" or something like that, hm... Moderators' opinions?

Some people are just short tempered I guess. I know I am. Part of me is really worried about my adult life because I can get upset so easily.

Usually child abuse is the result of the parent being incorrectly raised as a child. Lots of people back in the 60's believed that the only way to raise a child is through punishment, which in fact doesn't work.

I believe in non-intervention parenting, which means let the child raise their self, but provide the support when necessary (Obviously feed them and provide housing, and attention). If the child creates their own personality, rather than being influenced by someone else, they become more independent which will help in the future. That's at least how I was raised, I'm glad it turned out that way.

I'm not entirely sure...
It seems to mostly happen to kids with a step parent. Its easier to hit/abuse a child if its not really yours I guess...

Thy're assholes and their world is very small. A lot of things are simply not worth getting mad over. One needs bigger fish to fry.

Care to elaborate as in stating it a bit more concrete? In which aspect of their life?

I see. Thanks! Sorry if I was being a bit annoying.

It's alright, you are annoying. Looking for reasons is not going to solve problems. You'll only excuse their actions.

Everybody has a different idea of what would count as abuse.

As someone who grew up with physical and emotional abuse, I can confidently say they can all go to hell.
