I have been looking at some of the new sound cards some of them look pretty interesting.

ASUS is preparing to launch a ESS SABRE DAC based line STRIX Soar, STRIX RAID, STRIX RAID DLX. The Soar and RAID will both be 116 SNR using a ESS 9006 DAC while the RAID DLX will have 124 SNR with a ESS 9016.

ASUS Has added a large number of functions some of which I believe will be VAC bannable to games like CS. This is the image of the new STRIX series Sonic Radar built into the cards software in CS.

PowerColor has also announced a new 124 SNR card sporting a Wolfson 8741 DAC.

Yes, although as with any 7.1 gaming headset I recommend using optical to a Mixamp.

Obviously it's simulated. They can alter the audio waveform in various ways and mix it to make it sound as though it's source is behind you for example.
You can have as many virtual speakers as the DSP can do the math for and in any position in 3D space relative to your head. Only possible advantage is they'd have a pro-logic or dts decoder etc in the head set.
