Japanese has its own rules and structure and developed indepently of the west for thousands and thousands of years with almost zero contact with any other civilization that utilizes a language based on latin roots. So there can be a variety of different interpretations for a great many words and phrases.

My old job was to run the shipping department for a publishing company that translated and sold books on Japanese manufacturing techniques. It was crazy how many different interpretations for the same techniques we'd often run into. We had to actually sell products to cater to some of the different translations, depending on which one the client subscribed to.
