Hello, I have been a ghost in regards to the anime community as a whole for some time now, except I run live sound for various conventions around Minnesota. Anyways, I never really have anyone to talk to about it with in regards to current or trending anime. I do however keep up with EVERYTHING, I just don't have anyone that's as avid or diligent as me when it comes to watching it.

I am looking for some recommendations for Manga, Anime, anything really. I'll get this out of the way and say that I HATE moe or slice of life anime.

The style of anime I adore and love is where someone is taken outside of their normal comfort zone, that being put into another world, environment, setting etc.

Good examples of these kind of stories include

RE:Monster, Zero no Tsukima, Slice and wolf, Sword art online, Yuusha no tsukai, and Overlord.

Thank you for reading and considering this post, I look forward to meeting people I can talk about anime with on skype and such!

I'm not sure I'm as diligent or informed as you, but I enjoyed SAO and I think I have a few recommendations.

I'll start with the shows you might not like as much and move to the ones you might like better. First is Non Non Biyori. It might be too slice of life for you, but I thought it was cute. The next one is Hiiro No Kakera. It's got a lot more plot than the previous one, and it has an interesting concept. This next one might be a longshot because it is a little childish, but you could try Nagi No Asukara. The artwork is beautiful and the plot pace is pretty good. It's a little bit deeper than a lot of anime without being darker. Next is Kaze No Stigma. I'm not sure it fits your description of what you would like, but everyone I know who liked SAO also liked Kaze No Stigma, so it's probably worth a shot. FInally, my personal favorite, Yona of the Dawn. It's got a strong female lead, historic setting, and some good action here and there. I'm really hoping for another season.

Hope this helps. If you hate them, I'm sorry to have wasted your time with them, but I enjoyed them all.

Yo. I live in Minnesota now, too.

I love Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Escaflowne, and Mushishi. My guilty pleasure is the Slayers TV series (never finished Revolution or Evolution-R). There's a lot more that I like, but I can't think of them right now.

If you live near the city then you can try meetups.com for anime get-togethers.

FMA or FMA: Brotherhood is excellent if you've never watched it. Blue Seed, Outlaw Star, Nadesico, and Robotech for old school stuff. .hack//Sign is by far my favorite not Sword Art Online anime, but its admittedly not for everyone as its slow (but even if you think that its worth it for the soundtrack). GinTama for long anime/comedy. FLCL for wackiness.

For newer stuff I think you'd really enjoy Terror of Resonance.

Silver Spoon (from the FMA author) will make you change your mind about SOL animes.

Forgot to mention:
You just described The 12 Kingdoms which is one of my top 10 animes. Trust me you'll love it. Escaflowne is also a good shout too.
