Call me crazy, but I think the English Sailor Moon dub is amazing. That's probably because I watched it first... I mean, think about it. Would you have watched it as a kid without the dub? No, kids aren't gonna watch subbed anime, they don't have that kind of patience.
And so, a whole generation was exposed to the adventures of meatball head and the planeteers.

Now as a kid, I hated this show. I mean, I didn't hate it, I just really, really, really didn't care about anything that was happening. I just wanted to see her naked, that's all. I'd just sit there thinking, "come on... transform". I didn't remember anything else about it.
Checking it out now, I love it. I love the VA work. It's legendary. That's how you make a bad dub into a legend. It really gets you interested in Sailor Moons noble quest to right wrongs and triumph over evil, and that means you by the way.
And don't get me started on "Sailor Says"
That's just the cherry on the whole sailor sundae.

Pokemon is another example, I'm not sure if the VA work is good or bad or if it's just impossible for me to imagine those characters with any other voice than the one I remember. I mean, they mixed a rice ball with a jelly doughnut. That's impressive fucking up if I've ever seen it. But not all of these shows I have nostalgia for. I think the Ultra Maniac dub was good, however, it had some strange moments and dialogue that just felt unnatural, but in the most entertaining way. And let's not forget Revolutionary Girl Utena's hypnotic dub. Despite being inferior to the subbed version, it had it's own quality. It was so bad, that it made the show seem even more surreal.

I know of instances where good dubs make bad shows better, but not as you say it is.

For the most part, I think cheesy sounding dubs increase the enjoyment of shows that are already dumb to begin with

if a bad thing makes something good that would make it a good thing.

Well, it's the whole "Quality vs. enjoyment" thing.

Imagine re-dubbing the movie Troll 2 with good acting... That would ruin it.

I'm pretty sure that this question wasn't directed at people who just hate dubs in general.

I've seen good gag dubs help bad anime, but actually bad dubs just hurt to listen to. Bad dubs can be fun to make fun of, but you have to be with a group of friends and/or be drunk or high.

Bad dubs can make it more entertaining... like the infamous Appleseed OAV. I don't think anime fans ought to be calling any dubs worse than Japanese dubs, which are often full of bad acting or are overacted.
They lack the ability to tell good acting from bad in a foreign language since it's not their native one. It's just that everyone is so squee over anything Japanese that they react to Japanese language as a novelty; it seems like it makes everything sound better because of the exotic sound of something foreign. So it's unfair to English language actors to say their work is bad when many times it greatly improves the show, not to mention makes it accessible to a huge audience.

I don't think a bad dub can really make a story better, but I do think a Dub can be required for a series to make sense:
Ex Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt and Is This a Zombie? The language used in English makes sense. Also, make sure if you watch either to get an uncensored version. The former has a vocabulary that makes South Park look like Blue's Clues.

I actually answered the thread if you look closely.

I once saw an anime (late night) at a convention that was the epitome of bad dubbing. They played it with subtitles at the same time as they played the dubbing. The dub had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in common with the subs. I think that voice actors were either stoned or totally bored. What is amazing is that they published the show on disk without changing anything.

I think it depends if it was done that way on purpose or not. Some of you may remember the old Spike TV show MXC, Most Extreme Elimination Challenge. It was based on a Japanese game show called Takeshi's Castle, similar to a live action Mario game with the goal being to take the castle.

They dubbed it to be funny - I thought that was not a bad way to do it, and it was pretty amusing. You can probably still find it out there somewhere in the Interwebs.

A bad dub can have a certain car crash appeal, but I don't think it makes things better.

The Ghost Story dub, on the other hand, is what we used to call a fundub (as opposed to fandub). That's where you just throw the original script out the window and have a good time.

Go stand on the X and wait for the anvil to fall. Please.

Or watch the new dub, which is not shite.
