From the 50 or so episodes I've seen, Fairy Tail uses more cliffhangers than the amount of filler Naruto episodes.

Tho, it's still pretty enjoyable....

While it has it's downfalls, it's one of the few shounen series to actually have a major female character that isn't incredibly useless after 200+ episodes. Erza is one hell of a badass.

I guess there aren't too many 'magic guild' shounen series out there that I've seen either.

Yeah, I remember one of my friends in high school tried to get me into it.

I thought it was really bad, playing on all the stereotypes, being completely random etc....
But, a couple years later, I took another go at it from episode 1...

It's an anime that looks like One Piece, but doesn't at the same time. That's how it's different.

Not much lol.

Erza was the best thing about FT.

I probably would have stopped watching it wasn't for her, she was a fucking beastly character.

It was different because it was more predictable than any other anime, more predictable than I thought possible. Yup, Erza was the only good thing about it, IMO.

Erza.

Also the intermittent moments of crazy badassery and emotional resonance.

But mostly Erza. And Cana. And Levy. And Laki. And Mavis. And Wendy.

Also nakama.

I am not a fan of the nakama aspect of the show (because I got tired of anime beating that dead horse back in the '90s), but I agree that what sets it apart – especially from other shounen anime – is the sheer number of badass female characters, most notably Erza.

In the early days of the show, Natsu couldn't win the major battles without help, even if it was only advice from Happy. Plus there were some enemies he just couldn't take because they were a bad match for his magic. Many battles came down to a team effort

Now that has since changed and Natsu has become a Shonen God Beast, but the strong Team elements are still there

Welp, I'm only on episode 50-ish...

I'm incredibly surprised by how they keep making the baddies better and better... not only that, it always seems like a "counter", like how wind beats fire... fighting against all odds, over and over

It's also very light-hearted. No one so far dies, good guy or baddie. I read some comments on a few episodes complaining about "consistency", but I feel it only breaks away when the show tries to be funny. When sometimes, it shouldn't...
