Nothing wrong with being mainstream. However since mainstream is by definition popular material, maybe you have just not heard of the more obscure stuff that would strike your fancy? Not sure that I could be any help there, but there's probably someone in a rec thread that can help you find the obscure gems you never knew you wanted.

No, I don't really need your help but, I was wondering if this is considered mainstream.

Also, any theories on why I couldn't get into the apparently less "mainstream" animes?

Oh yes, and Death Note

Lesson one, kiddo. Listen up because it's an important one at 19. Like what you like and f**k what other people think.

Basically, this.
If you only like something cos it's mainstream, then you are controlled by the trends.
But if you automatically hate something cos it's mainstream, then you are controlled by the trends.
So just keep enjoying whatever it is you enjoy. Applies to music and movies as well.
As far as theories, are you mostly just watching anime recommended by friends? Perhaps without a social aspect, you are having difficulty finding something your speed? If you do want to explore more of the vast richness of anime, but simply don't have a good starting point, there's a thread somewhere around here dedicated solely to helping recommend anime.

Humans often display a curious aversion to popular things, which can make people feel unnecessarily embarrassed by liking popular stuff. Emphasis on the unnecessarily. There's nothing wrong with enjoying popular anime (including K-ON, guys!).

As for not getting into more obscure anime, one possibility is that it can take longer to find value and enjoyment in some unconventional stories. Often popular shows give the people (at least some of) what they want very quickly (I think Fairy Tail is a good example of this).

Everything is mainstream.

Mainstream=Having hype

Every anime has hype

Thus

Mainstream=Every anime

Yes I do watch anime recommended by friends. I watched Attack on Titan and started Fairy Tail cuz of them...

I saw Naruto on Cartoon Network? Really liked it, they had a 100 episode marathon at the time
I saw Death Note because my cousin said I'd really enjoy it. Oh boy, I did.

Every other anime I might've watched: simply because they were popular(on crunchyroll). go figure

Oh but, I've also been recommended Highschool of the Dead. It's somewhat mainstream, somewhat a fad(everything zombies back then lol...)

But then again, a lot of mainstream things at a time fall out of favor eventually

Yeah usually the shounens are the mainstream ones.

But as someone said like what you like, it doesn't matter if you are mainstream or not. If you enjoy it then there is no problem.

I am more of a slice of life kind of person now. I did start off with Fairy Tail and htose types of animes as you listed, but I am more of a slice of life person now.

If you want you could try something new, but that's totally up to you

They're mainstream because they're good. I think most non-mainstream anime eventually make their way into becoming mainstream anyway.

For some reason (ahembleach), cable ONLY wants to show the endless shounen-fight serials, so if you're hooked on a fight-serial like One Piece, Naruto or Fairy Tail, it's likely that you're watching a show on cable, or could be mistaken for someone who does.
And for years, that was why "mainstream" was a dirty word, but not as dirty as "Naruto": Because it tended to attract first-time fans who didn't research the many, many avenues of where to find anime series--like CR, for instance--watched any series the gaijin potheads at CN handed them, and called themselves "Anime fans".
The same was true for Cowboy Bebop, and then Death Note, and....would I embarrass anyone old enough to remember "Oh man, you gotta watch Wolf's Rain/Witch Hunter Robin"? Back before streaming, it was hard to find the right stuff for free.

If you're posting this on CR, it at least shows that you are not beyond hope.

Why does it matter?
Watch whatever you want to watch. People like different things. It's that simple.

You scrub. Go watch real anime like School Days, not mainstream crap like Attack on Titan. In case you can't tell, that was a joke.

You watched it, but did you get it?

Precisely!

The Irregular at Magic High School had little to none "feels" moments. It was really interesting and I also like it better than SAO, the plot is better...

But it lacks some suspense.

.....Guess not...

@maxgale

There was a point after episode 10+ when it was really slow: the magic competition or something. Either way, I remember I wanted to watch all the episodes, but by that time it lost some of it's "suspense". Didn't fall asleep, like my friend did when he was watching it, but it definitely felt more like a chore

I'm more mainstream than anyone.

We sleep on warm, comfortable beds, and get to eat whenever we want!

It's a good life.
