You know how I said I'm watching sailor moon in dub, well, only for the first season, after that I'm definitely watching it in subs, because the rest of the show looks amazing. I've seen clips of some of the later sailor moon series before. It looked amazing. Even one that aired on the Sci-Fi channel, and it had nudity in it. I'm sure it was a movie and not the show, but still...

Plus, some of them have been directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara, who is pretty damn amazing. There's no way the show could be like it was originally with him directing.

By judging the appearance of them, the later seasons aren't as cheesy, the characters are more developed, there's more action, there's more adult content, and there's more depth entirely. But that's me judging a book by it's cover.

Keep in mind it's been a while since I've watched the anime, but the show can get a bit dark. There are a lot of monster of the week filler episodes of varying amounts of cheese, but the main storyline gets fairly serious. It also varies from the manga on some key points, especially in the last arc. Some characters are more fleshed out while some are skipped entirely.

There's a filler arc after the first arc, but it has some good villains, so I recommend watching it.

I'd recommend trying the manga if you want a more serious and darker version of the story.

If "all you saw was the cheesy 90's series", you saw the half of the series that was a "little girl" show.
Although the second half of the second DiC-dubbed series, where Chibi-Usa/Reenie starts becoming a "good" character, and they fight against Rubeus and the four Sisters, that only hints at where the show was headed. (LokiLB's avatar could be considered a -SPOILER-.)
The series basically grows up with its heroine, and by the time you get into the third, or S, series (which could have been the one you saw on cable, but on Cartoon Network), it ain't your little sister's show anymore--The animation quality improves and the plot arc starts ratcheting up the tension, bringing in the mysterious and ruthless Outer Sailors, and turning into a darker Madoka-like storyline, but still with Usagi/Serena and her friends acting like charming ditzballs.

The fourth season, SuperS, is not as fortunate, going back to being a "little girl" show with Chibi-Usa as the main character--and Usagi relegated to comedy relief--giving Ikuhara the stylistic keys to the show, and letting him slop on the artsy Utena overstylizing, with a big, big brush. It's also got a dark storyline, but it's piled under a lot of pink cotton candy. (The villains have a "circus" motif, so clear the dance floor for Ikuhara...)

And if Viz ever does get to series 5, Sailor Stars, as promised...some of us true believers were lucky enough to watch it on fansubs, and it's a bit like "that final season that should never have happened" (Tuxedo Mask and ChibiUsa are written out of the show, replaced by three mysterious boy-band bishounen), but just to finally have it on our shores.

R (Aliens / Black Moon Kingdom) and S (Death Busters) are the two strongest parts of the show, IMO. Super S (Dead Moon Circus) is a shitpile because of Chibi-Usa overload (and Usagi becoming even dumber than she was before). The first arc of Sailor Stars is the proper ending to the Super S story.

And that is why I love that season.

If you don't know about the other seasons here's rundown

R - Starts off with an arc that does not appear in the manga where aliens plays music to grow power for some tree plus Mamoru is arabian, then onward to the actual arc where we meet little pink girl that people hates in the anime and there these villians who are named after Pokémon games that wants the Silver Crystal because almost every villain wants it, and we found out the Chibi-Usa is Usagi and Mamoru's daughter even though in S and Super S she falls in love with her own future father and become a bitch to her mother.

S - This one has these two lesbians that Cloverway tricked us on thinking they were cousins named Haruka and Michiru who are Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune respectively, as well as my sailor waifu Setsuna known as Sailor Pluto, and Chibi-Usa returns as Sailor Chibi Moon who has as useless attack that becomes a running gag for each episode, and the villain of the season called the Death Busters which if you take the Ghostbusters and turn them in to villians that turns people into monsters you got these guys, and later we get introduced to best Sailor Senshi Hotaru Tomoe (who isn't a Senshi yet) whom Chibi-Usa becomes friends with, but it turns out she's a Sailor Senshi who can cause silence, ruin and birth, also Shin Chan appears .

Super S A.K.A The Chibi-Usa Show starring Chibi-Usa and it's about Chibi-Usa - Chibi-Usa the main hero of the show haves dreams with this Pegasi (This was before Bronies existed),and Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, nor Saturn aren't in this season (Uranus, Saturn, and Pluto appears in the Movies, as well as that one special, and the games as well), and the villains the season are the Dead Moon Circus and one them is a guy and they're getting commands by female Yoda to grab people's heart or something (Haven't watch the original in a long time) by using a monitor, later they've been replaced by these chicks called the Amazon Trio, and also Pegasus is no longer called Pegasus he is now called Helios which name sounds like a Harry Potter spell, anyways he's the third or fouth guy who Chibi-Usa's in love with (1st being Mamoru obviously, 2nd being a character from the Sailor Moon Another Story SFC game, and 3rd being a character from the Super S movie), also Luna and Artemis has a daughter.

Stars (The one that isn't dubbed) - Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are back and so does Hotaru who turned into baby in S, then turned to a 5 year old, then she suddenly turns to Sailor Saturn, meanwhile a villain from Super S returns and captures Mamoru, So all 10 Sailor Senshis sets out to rescue him, after 6 episodes of that Chibi-Usa no longer appears in the show and Mamoru does now turn to Tuxedo Mask (at all) because he gets captured...again, now we have 3 Pop idol guys that can turn into chicks called the Sailor Starlights, and back then I see videos pairing Seiya with Usagi even though Seiya's half-female, also if we miss Chibi-Usa, say hello to Chibi Chibi who is smaller than Chibi-Usa, cuter than Chibi-Usa, and only says Chibi all the time, and she got the same seiyuu as Usagi, also the villians are Sailor Galactica (I didn't watch many of Stars so I'm not saying much),

Live-Action Sailor Moon - Like the first season but with real people and a lot of changes, like Chibi-Usa being replaced again by human Sailor Lunam anD Mercury turning evil.

Megas XLR - The Senshis became robots, that's all

Sailor Moon Crystal Brotherhood - Follows the manga (way too close), but has a low budget so they air it on the Internet where they release 2 episodes each month.

Oh, lord--And it's going to be that much harder to watch it again, now that they DO.
(You'd think they would have latched onto it since then, but it doesn't have the same smugsy-wugsy hyperactive 'Mercan-toon sitcom humor as MLP:FiM)

Not to mention, Moon doesn't even get to use her power: The attack consists of a now more noticeably pre-pubescent not-so-Chibi ringing her "Twinkle Bell" to call Pegasus, who has to appear an charge up Moon's stick with his own power, and then Moon can use it on the villain.
That's a pretty good metaphor right there for how far Usagi had fallen in the SuperS series, but at least she got to be the focus of Stars again.

.

The sub-villains in Stars are "Ani-Mates" in abstract animal-themed costumes (Iron Mouse is the overload of cuteness), led by Sailor Galaxia, who is a MAJOR BADASS.
Sera Myu stage musicals have often speculated about what would happen if Galaxia and Queen Beryl teamed up, and Galaxia still manages to out-badass her.
(Nehelenia in SuperS comes close, for being a psychotically deranged variation on Snow White's Queen, but it's a tough call.)

Well you can't really look at a anime and be like "Hey adult content makes it good." I mean, unless you purposely are going to look up Hentai lol. Pretty sure CR doesn't host that. The real point however is that I am not too sure exactly. I haven't looked into the series yet. I do however really wish to, though am waiting currently for other animes to finish releasing most their content so I can finish them completely before moving onto the next.

Come to think about it... I think that I'll watch it all in dub. Especially since there's the censorship stuff which is funny to me, and also the cheesy voice acting, and there's a chin shan appearance.

It sounds like the whole show is corny and has a silly charm to it, not just the first season. In fact, if there's that much Chibi-Usa, I'm sure the show must get a little dumb

(Well, technically not Shin-chan, just an obnoxious kid who won't stop imitating him:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBE4LPufkf4 )

And the cheesy censored "cousins" Cloverway dub of S and SuperS is OOP, so you'll just have to wait for the plain ol' GOOD Viz dubs like the rest of us, unless you feel like surfing YouTube.

I found the old dub on a few streaming sites.
