So, I'm sure you're all aware that Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (When they Cry) is unlicensed. Funimation once had it, but it didn't sell well, so they let it's contract expire, and because of this many are doubtful that any other company will save it. I watched Higurashi season 1 a few months ago and it was amazing, and it DESERVES saving. It's one of those anime like no other. Truly unique. I really hope one of two things happen in the near future:
1. It gets saved
or
2. It gets remade (preferably by studio ufotable)
I hate that this anime has to be so obscure and hard to obtain/watch. I haven't even watched the second season myself because it's so hard to find. I might have to just go to Japan in order to buy the series. What do you guys think of this whole mess? Should Higurashi be saved? Remade? Or will it never be able to sell well enough for anyone to be interested enough to license it?

Maybe one day?

If it happens, hopefully they'll give it a new dub.

Yeah, for real. Plus, they'd have to since the second season doesn't have a dub and it would be different from the first season's dub.

Higurashi really is a one-off masterpiece IMO. I managed to buy the DVD's for the first season on ebay a few years ago. It's a malaysian copy and has english subs, but it would be nice to have a western release of the first and second seasons together.

there are a few really good shows which just don't do well with western audiences. Lyrical nanoha's is another example. kodomo no jikan also.

I was reading gantz the other night and these is a scene where a (spelling backwards to hide spoiler) > gnitoohs loohcs < happens and I just knew they would never ever sell it in america.

ufotable remake higurashi? Iono, I think Shaft would be perfect for a remake. Can you imagine a bunch of crazies with insane head tilt plot development?! Just take my money if Shaft were ever to do so

I just said Ufotable because they've remade a studio DEEN anime before (Fate/Stay Night).

I would love to see Rena, Shion, or Mion do the head tilt. While in crazy mode.

most likely not. It sold like shit.

Its a very niche show and contrary to popular belief, licencors don't care about making you happy if it doesn't make them money (physical releases).

The best bet to watch it legally would be to convince CR to pick up the streaming license to the complete series.

This is based off a video game which I guess didn't sell well either in the U.S.

Seems this was more popular in Japan than it was here. A remake might a be possible but whether it gets licensed again is doubtful since the Japanese will probably be wanting way more than anyone is willing to pay for a something that has only a niche audience outside of Japan.

First of all... You need to finish Higurashi. Like, go watch Season 2 now.

Second, I really do hope they re-release it at some point, but I just don't think it's likely at this point. Same thing happened with Umineko (although you should really just play the VN or read the manga because the anime was not that great). I do hope eventually that some streaming company like Funi or CR would take a chance to do it, but they continually let me down with not picking up Nanoha or Symphogear as well, so I've lost hope in that.

Could they re-boot it? Maybe. If they did, I don't think Ufotable is the right team to do it, though. Somebody like White Fox, maybe. Bones could possibly do it, too. Gotta get the crazy just right.

Saw that, did you. Haha.

I just don't know if Shaft can do those terrifying faces! Maybe. Shaft, White Fox, I figured maybe Bones.

But Ufotable, which I cannot see happening or working out well. Maybe because they do a lot of VN it's possible.
